Office Chair Firmness

Admin October 08, 2026

When choosing an office chair, it is advisable to opt for one with medium firmness, neither too soft nor too hard.

Drawbacks of Soft Chairs

Sitting on an overly soft office chair for an extended period, although initially comfortable, poses several issues. When seated on a very soft chair, the buttocks and body sink in, leading to poor blood circulation. Due to the large contact area between the body and the chair and the lack of sufficient support, body weight is unevenly distributed, resulting in excessive local pressure. For instance, prolonged pressure on the buttocks can cause discomfort and may even lead to problems like boils. Moreover, a soft chair makes it difficult for users to maintain proper sitting posture, causing the body to unconsciously bend, lean forward, or lean backward, which places additional stress on the spine and waist. Long-term use may result in spinal deformities and lower back pain.

Shortcomings of Hard Chairs

Overly hard office chairs are also unsuitable for prolonged use. Although hard chairs do not cause issues like poor blood circulation and excessive local pressure as soft chairs do, sitting on a hard chair for a long time can be very uncomfortable. Hard chairs fail to conform well to the body's curves and do not provide effective cushioning and support. When seated on a hard chair, body weight is concentrated on a few limited contact points, such as the buttocks, back, and legs, causing these areas to bear significant pressure. Over time, this leads to physical discomfort, including buttock pain and back stiffness.

Advantages of Medium-Firm Chairs

Medium-firm office chairs are the ideal choice. They effectively alleviate discomfort from prolonged sitting, provide sufficient support, and help users maintain proper sitting posture. These chairs can be designed according to the body's curves, allowing for better body-chair fit, distributing body weight evenly, and reducing pressure on the spine and waist. At the same time, they do not cause excessive local pressure on the buttocks like soft chairs, avoiding issues with blood circulation. Medium-firm chairs strike a balance between comfort and support, enabling people to remain relatively comfortable during long working hours while protecting their health.
