Office Chair Fecal Odor

Admin October 17, 2026

When an office chair emits a fecal odor, it needs to be treated specifically according to the material and the source of the odor, while preventive measures should also be taken.

I. Treatment Methods for Office Chairs of Different Materials

  1. Residual feces or stains on the surface
If the odor is caused by incomplete cleaning, the surface residues need to be dealt with immediately:
  • Fabric/ordinary fabric seats: Wipe the stains with a wet wipe or a soft cloth dipped in diluted neutral detergent. If the odor is stubborn, spray a mixture of white vinegar and water in a 1:1 ratio, cover with a towel to absorb the odor, then wipe thoroughly with detergent and ventilate to dry.
  • Genuine leather seats: Use a special leather cleaner to wipe. Avoid alcohol or strongly corrosive cleaners. For the fabric part, use baking soda water for local treatment.
  • Wooden seats: Dust off with a dry cloth, wipe the odor area with lemon juice, then rinse with clean water and dry. Place bamboo charcoal bags to absorb residual odors.
  1. Deep-seated odor treatment
  • Adsorption method: Place activated carbon bags, coffee grounds, or tea bags on the surface or in the crevices of the seat. Utilize their porous structures to adsorb odor molecules and replace them after 48 hours.
  • Ventilation and airing: Move the chair to a well-ventilated place like a balcony. The ultraviolet rays in sunlight can kill bacteria and remove odors. Fabric seats should avoid direct sunlight to prevent fading.
  • Disinfection and sterilization: Spray the surface with 75% alcohol (not for genuine leather) or diluted 84 disinfectant, let it sit for ten minutes, and then wipe clean.
  1. Special causes and treatment of leather office chairs
If the odor is related to the material, production residues, or the environment, targeted solutions are required:
  • Material issues: Low-quality leather may emit a pungent odor due to chemical coatings or fillers. Contact the merchant to verify the material and production standards and request a return or exchange if necessary.
  • Production residues: Residues of harmful substances such as formaldehyde and benzene can be accelerated to volatilize through ventilation or adsorbed by placing activated carbon bags.
  • Environmental factors: High humidity is prone to breed bacteria and mold. Keep the environment dry. For pet excrement or cigarette smoke that has seeped in, wipe the surface with diluted white vinegar.
  • Lipid oxidation: Long-term high temperature or humidity can cause the leather lipids to deteriorate. Professional cleaning or refurbishment services are required.

II. Preventive Measures

  1. Personal hygiene management: Maintain intestinal health, treat constipation or perianal problems promptly. Clean thoroughly after using the toilet to avoid stains.
  2. Regular cleaning and maintenance: Vacuum the seat crevices every week. Soak and wash removable seat covers with salt-containing bleach.
  3. Environmental control: Avoid keeping the seat in a humid and enclosed environment for a long time. Reduce the impact of pet contact or smoking.
