Office Chair Fatigue
Fatigue caused by prolonged sitting in an office chair can be alleviated through adjusting posture, choosing the right chair, performing stretches, psychological relaxation, and setting reminders.

I. Adjusting Posture
Poor posture is one of the primary factors contributing to fatigue. Slouching, shrugging, or tilting the head forward significantly increases the burden on the spine, particularly the lumbar and cervical regions. The correct sitting posture involves keeping the back straight, shoulders relaxed naturally, feet flat on the ground, knees at the same height as the hips, and adjusting the chair height so that the forearms are parallel to the desktop. This posture helps distribute body pressure, reduce muscle tension, and thereby lower fatigue levels.
II. Choosing the Right Office Chair
The design of the chair directly affects comfort during prolonged sitting. An ideal office chair should have adjustable height, lumbar support, and armrests to accommodate different body types and usage scenarios. If replacing the chair is not an option, adding a lumbar support cushion or seat pad can optimize support. Additionally, the computer screen should be adjusted to a height level with the eyes to avoid excessive stretching of the neck muscles from looking down or up.
III. Performing Small Movements and Stretches
Maintaining the same posture for an extended period can lead to muscle stiffness and poor blood circulation. It is recommended to perform simple stretches every 30 minutes:
- Neck Stretch: Place both hands on the chair armrests, slowly tilt the head backward, feel the stretch in the front of the neck, and hold for 10 seconds;
- Leg Exercises: Sit on the chair with legs together, slowly lift the calves until parallel to the ground, and repeat 10 times;
- Chair Twist: Sit on the edge of the chair, feet flat on the ground, place both hands on the back of the chair, slowly twist the upper body to the right, hold for 15 seconds, and then switch to the left.
These movements promote muscle relaxation and blood circulation, relieving local fatigue.
IV. Psychological Relaxation
Stress can exacerbate physical fatigue. Mindfulness exercises can lower stress hormone levels: Sit up straight with eyes closed, inhale deeply so that the abdomen expands, and exhale slowly, repeating 5 times. This deep breathing technique activates the parasympathetic nervous system, improves mood, and reduces physical tension.
V. Setting Timed Reminders
The inertia of prolonged sitting can cause individuals to overlook signals of physical fatigue. It is advisable to set an hourly alarm on your phone to remind you to get up and move or change your posture. Even standing for just 1 minute or taking a few steps can break the static state and reduce continuous pressure on muscles and joints.
Some brands of office chairs have unique designs for alleviating fatigue. For example, the Jingdong Jingzao computer chair focuses on ergonomics, with multiple adjustable features to help users find the most suitable sitting position; the Sihoo computer chair uses breathable materials and an ergonomic backrest design to provide good support for the spine. Choosing such products can further enhance comfort during prolonged sitting.
