Office Chair Falls Down
The most common reasons for an office chair to fall down are the aging or poor sealing of the gas spring, as well as incorrect installation of the backrest fasteners, which require targeted handling based on the specific cause.

Reasons and Self-Inspection Methods for Falls Caused by Gas Spring Issues
The gas spring (gas strut or hydraulic strut) is the core component of an office chair's lifting system. Its aging or poor sealing is the main reason for the chair to fall down. Slow leakage of high-pressure nitrogen gas inside or wear of the oil seal can lead to the failure of the gas spring's function, manifested as abnormal lifting. The following self-inspection methods can be used:
- Listen to sounds and feel: When lifting or sitting still, if you hear an obvious hissing sound of air leakage or a stuttering abnormal sound of metal friction, it may indicate that the gas spring's sealing has failed or the internal structure is worn.
- Observe the descent mode: If the chair descends slowly and continuously, it is usually due to slow leakage of the gas spring; if it suddenly drops without any resistance, it may involve serious damage to the internal structure, posing a safety hazard.
- Check mechanical connections: Check whether the connections between the gas spring and the five-star base (pedestal) and the chair seat chassis are loose. Loose screws may cause the chair to be unstable, but usually do not trigger regular automatic descent.
Solutions to Gas Spring Issues
- Contact the official after-sales service: If the chair is within the warranty period, find the purchase proof (invoice, order record) and contact the brand's official customer service to describe the problem. Mainstream brands offer warranties of 3 years, 5 years, or even longer for core components such as gas springs, allowing you to enjoy free repair or replacement services; if the warranty period has expired, you can still inquire about paid repair or original spare part purchase channels.
- Replace the gas spring yourself: If the chair is out of warranty and the official repair cost is too high, you can replace it yourself. The gas spring is a one-time sealed component and needs to be replaced as a whole. When operating, safely disassemble the old gas spring, measure the outer diameter of the failed gas strut (accurate to 0.1mm), and identify the SAE304 certification number on the laser marking of the tube material to avoid using inferior 204 series explosive struts.
Backrest Fastener Issues and Daily Prevention
If the fall is caused by incorrect installation of the backrest fasteners, contact the after-sales service or professional repair personnel in a timely manner. In daily use, the following methods can be used to prevent problems:
- Rotate the lifting mechanism to trigger three complete strokes every week to keep the O-ring silicone gasket actively sliding.
- Apply a small amount of organic silicon protective grease to the exposed part of the aluminum alloy piston rod every quarter to isolate moisture and extend the life of the gas spring.
