Preventing Falls from Office Chairs

Admin October 14, 2026

To prevent falls from office chairs, one can start from selecting the right chair, maintaining proper sitting posture, mastering the skills of standing up and sitting down, and improving environmental conditions.

Selecting the Right Chair

  • Appropriate Height: When sitting, your feet should be able to rest flat on the ground, with your thighs parallel to the ground, ensuring an even distribution of body weight and reducing the risk of falls due to unstable center of gravity. Generally, an office chair height of 40 - 45 centimeters is suitable, and can be adjusted slightly according to your own height.
  • Good Stability: The chair base should be wide and stable. For a four-legged chair, the four corners should form a rectangle. Avoid chairs with a base that is too small or irregularly shaped. Chairs with anti-slip designs at the bottom offer better stability and can effectively prevent falls caused by sliding.
  • With Armrests: Armrests provide support when standing up or sitting down, helping to maintain body balance. The height of the armrests should be close to the height of your elbows when your arms hang naturally, making it easy to grip.

Maintaining Proper Sitting Posture

  • Straight Back: Keep your spine in its natural curve, avoiding slouching or excessive forward or backward leaning. Imagine a string pulling your head upward, keeping your body's center of gravity on your pelvis and enhancing body stability.
  • Knees Level with Hips: Ensure that your thighs are parallel to the ground, allowing your body weight to be evenly distributed on the chair and preventing falls due to body weight shifting.
  • Feet Flat on the Ground: Spread your feet shoulder-width apart or slightly stagger them front and back, firmly placing the entire soles of your feet on the ground to increase the support area and improve body balance.

Mastering the Skills of Standing Up and Sitting Down

  • When Standing Up: Use the strength of your legs, first lean your body forward, shift your center of gravity to your feet, then place your hands on the chair armrests and use your arm strength to slowly stand up, avoiding falls due to excessive force or improper posture.
  • When Sitting Down: First approach the chair, keep your back straight, and slowly squat down. When you feel the chair touching the back of your legs, gently sit down. At the same time, touch the edge of the chair with your hands to ensure accurate movements and prevent falls from sitting on empty space.

Improving Environmental Conditions

  • Keep Passageways Clear: Ensure that there are no clutter around the chair, and the ground is clean, tidy, and dry to avoid falls caused by tripping or slipping.
  • Increase Lighting: Provide sufficient light in areas where you often sit on the chair to avoid falls caused by not being able to see the chair's position clearly due to dim light.
