Office Chair Fabric Odor

Admin October 09, 2026

The odor of office chair fabrics mainly comes from natural wood volatiles, paint or coating volatiles, volatile organic compounds in adhesives, and chemical substances released from leather materials or glues and coatings used in the manufacturing process.

Odor Sources of Office Chairs with Different Materials

  1. Solid Wood Office Chairs: The odor may primarily stem from the natural fragrance of the wood itself. For example, pine wood emits a pine resin scent. These odors are generally harmless and result from the volatilization of natural components in the wood. After ventilation for 2 to 4 weeks, these odors will significantly diminish as the volatile components in the wood gradually release over time.
  2. Office Chairs Treated with Paint or Coatings: During the curing process, they release benzene series compounds (such as benzene and toluene) and TVOC (Total Volatile Organic Compounds). Benzene series compounds have a pungent or sweet odor and pose certain health risks. Long-term exposure may lead to respiratory diseases or nervous system damage. TVOC is a general term for a mixture of volatile organic compounds, which can also have adverse effects on the human body.
  3. Leather Office Chairs: The pungent odor mainly comes from materials such as glues and coatings used during the manufacturing process. The volatile organic compounds contained in these materials volatilize after the chair is made, creating an odor. If the leather material itself has undergone chemical treatment, it may also retain some chemical substances, further exacerbating the odor.

Odor Treatment Methods

  1. Enhanced Ventilation: This is the most basic and effective method. Continuous ventilation for 3 to 6 months can usually reduce indoor pollutant concentrations to safe levels. Ventilation accelerates the release and diffusion of volatile organic compounds, lowering pollutant concentrations in indoor air.
  2. Use of Activated Carbon Adsorption: Activated carbon has a porous structure that can adsorb odor molecules in the air. Placing activated carbon packs around the office chair can assist in removing odors.
  3. Placement of Orange Peels or Green Tea Leaves: Orange peels and green tea leaves have certain adsorption and neutralization effects on odors. Placing orange peels or green tea leaves near the office chair can improve air quality and reduce odors.
