Office Chair Fabric Installation

Admin October 12, 2026

The installation method for office chair fabric should be selected according to the type of chair. There are differences in the installation steps between ordinary office chairs and IKEA fabric office chairs, as detailed below:

Ordinary Office Chair Fabric Installation

  1. Prepare tools and materials: You will need a Phillips screwdriver, a flat-head screwdriver, needle-nose pliers, scissors, a staple gun (or a hot glue gun, self-tapping screws), new fabric (it is recommended to choose durable and breathable polyester or nylon blend fabric). If there are plastic cover plates on the sides of the chair, you will also need a pry bar.
  2. Remove the old fabric and sponge layer: Turn the chair upside down. Use a Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the screws that secure the seat cushion and remove the seat cushion and backrest. Carefully peel off the trim or snaps along the edges of the old fabric. If the old fabric is fixed with nails, use needle-nose pliers to pull out the nails one by one to avoid damaging the underlying sponge or wood. After removing the old fabric, clean the sponge and wooden frame, and check the condition of the sponge. Replace it if it is severely deformed.
  3. Cut the new fabric according to the old one: Lay the removed old fabric flat on a table, smooth it out, and use scissors to cut along the edges, leaving a margin of 3 - 5 centimeters. If the old fabric is severely deformed or torn, first measure the length, width, and thickness of the seat cushion and backrest with a soft tape measure, draw the shape on the fabric, and ensure symmetry when cutting, with a unified fabric texture direction. You can also measure the dimensions of each part of the chair seat in advance and leave a margin of 5 - 8 centimeters on the new fabric for easy hemming.
  4. Secure the new fabric: Put the new fabric over the wooden frame of the seat cushion or backrest. Pull it flat with your hands initially to ensure that the fabric is centered. Start securing it from the center to avoid wrinkles. If using a staple gun, first staple a nail in the middle of the front, then symmetrically extend to both sides. Pull the fabric tight with your hands every time you staple a nail, and control the nail spacing to 2 - 3 centimeters. Add a few more nails at the edges for reinforcement. If it is a snap structure, tuck the fabric edge into the slot and then press it tight with a screwdriver. For the curved part of the backrest, you can cut a few small slits at the corners with scissors to make the fabric fit better. After securing, check the surface for bulges or depressions and make adjustments if necessary. You can also use strong double-sided tape or hot glue to secure the fabric edges.
  5. Reassemble the chair and test it: Re-fix the repaired seat cushion and backrest to the chair with screws and tighten all the screws. Press each part with your hands to confirm that the fabric is not loose and there is no abnormal noise. Then sit on it to experience and feel whether the support is even. If a certain position is too loose, you can add nails locally.

IKEA Fabric Office Chair Cover Installation

  1. Preparation: Check whether the cover package contains all the accessories, usually just the cover body and Velcro/elastic bands. Prepare scissors (for backup) and a flat-head screwdriver (to assist in adjusting gaps), and clean the dust on the chair seat to ensure a firm attachment.
  2. Installation steps: If there is an existing cover, first peel off the Velcro or unzip along the seams and slowly peel it off from the top of the backrest towards the seat cushion. Lay the new cover flat on the chair seat, align the contours of the backrest and seat cushion, especially paying attention to the seam positions on the inside of the armrests. Starting from the top of the backrest, gradually wrap the cover downwards, using the Velcro or elastic bands to fit into the seat gaps. For tighter areas, use a flat-head screwdriver to assist in prying open the gaps. Smooth out the wrinkles to ensure that the armrests and the corners of the backrest fit without air bubbles. The elastic bands at the bottom of the seat cushion can be hooked onto the buckles on the chair base.
