Surge in Office Chair Exports (Structural Growth Instead of Overall Surge)

Admin October 11, 2026

Office chair exports have not seen an across-the-board surge but have experienced structural growth, presenting an overall trend of 'declining quantity and rising quality'.

Decline in Total Volume and Market Shift

In 2025, China's office chair export value reached $3.60 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 8.9%, with exports to the United States dropping by 21.6%. This trend contrasts with historical data: during the 2020 pandemic, driven by remote work demand, domestic companies saw a nearly 30% year-on-year increase in overseas orders, with production rising to 168 million units. However, by 2025, China's share of the U.S. office chair import market plummeted from 68.4% in 2018 to just 16.4%, with Southeast Asian countries like Vietnam becoming the primaryๆ‰ฟๆŽฅๆ–น (successors). This indicates a declining reliance on traditional export markets and significant changes in the competitive landscape.

Structural Highlights: High-End Products and Emerging Markets

Despite the overall decline, high-end categories and emerging markets have performed outstandingly. The export share of self-branded office swivel chairs priced over $200 jumped from 9.2% in 2020 to 31.4% in 2025, reflecting an increase in product technological content and brand added value. In emerging markets, orders from France surged by 125% year-on-year, high-end demand in Germany increased by 40%, and orders from markets like Saudi Arabia and Chile grew significantly. These figures indicate that the industry is shifting from low-price competition to a differentiated, high-added-value approach.

Supporting Role of Regional Industrial Clusters

Anji, Zhejiang, as the world's largest office chair industrial cluster, achieved a chair industry output value of 31.19 billion yuan in 2024, accounting for half of the national export volume. Its success lies in the in-depth application of cross-border e-commerce: for example, Wanbao Smart Home reaches global consumers directly through platforms like Amazon, breaking free from traditional trade channel limitations. This model not only reduces reliance on a single market but also enhances supply chain efficiency through digital operations, serving as a typical case of regional industrial upgrading.

Industry Transformation Direction

Currently, office chair exports exhibit the characteristics of 'declining quantity and rising quality': while total volume declines due to geopolitical and cost competition, high-end categories and emerging markets have become new growth points. Companies need to focus on technological innovation, brand building, and leverage cross-border e-commerce to expand diversified markets, addressing challenges from low-cost competition in Southeast Asian countries and shrinking traditional markets.
