Office Chair Explosion Injuring Buttocks or Rectum

Admin October 09, 2026

The term 'office chair explosion injuring buttocks or rectum' refers to incidents where pneumatic lift office chairs explode, causing severe injuries to the user's buttocks or rectal area, often due to defects in low-quality pneumatic rod components.

Typical Cases

  1. 2009 Jiaozhou, Shandong Incident: A 14-year-old boy was adjusting a pneumatic chair when the rod pierced his buttocks, damaging multiple blood vessels and ultimately leading to death from excessive blood loss.
  2. 2010 Xiamen Incident: A woman sitting on a lift chair while blow-drying her hair experienced a sudden explosion. Flying screws and pads penetrated her body, causing a rectal tear. Doctors removed a 20-centimeter metal object from her body.
  3. 2007 Zhoushan, Zhejiang Incident: Ms. Lou's chair exploded, puncturing the seat and propelling numerous fragments up to ten centimeters into her body.

Causes of Explosion

  1. Thin Walls of Pneumatic Rods: To reduce costs, low-quality pneumatic rods have insufficient wall thickness, making them unable to withstand internal high pressure and prone to rupture under frequent use or external force.
  2. Insufficient Purity of Inert Gas or Replacement with Compressed Air: Proper pneumatic rods should be filled with high-purity nitrogen or other inert gases to maintain stability. If filled with compressed air or impure gases, the gas expands rapidly when heated, causing a sudden increase in pressure and potential explosion.
  3. Rapid Temperature Increase Due to Frequent Lifting: The internal gas in pneumatic rods generates heat through friction during rapid lifting. If heat dissipation is inadequate, the temperature rise further increases gas pressure, exceeding the rod's load-bearing capacity.

Preventive Measures

  1. Purchase from Reputable Manufacturers: Prioritize products priced above 200 yuan and avoid 'three-no' (no brand, no quality certificate, no manufacturer information) or low-priced, inferior chairs. Reputable brands typically have strict quality control over pneumatic rods.
  2. Check Smoothness of Pneumatic Rod Adjustment: When purchasing, sit and adjust the height. If the lifting is jerky, makes unusual noises, or encounters significant resistance, there may be internal structural defects in the pneumatic rod, requiring careful selection.
  3. Ensure Installation of Explosion-Proof Steel Plate: A steel plate with a thickness of at least 2 millimeters should be installed between the seat cushion and the pneumatic rod. This can block flying fragments in the event of a pneumatic rod explosion, reducing direct injury to the body.
