Office Chair Explosion Test

Admin October 09, 2026

The office chair explosion test primarily reveals the explosion risks that may arise from component defects in pneumatic lift-type swivel chairs, with the core causes related to the quality of the pneumatic rod, gas composition, and usage environment.

Explosion Principles and Risk Causes

Pneumatic lift-type swivel chairs achieve lifting functionality through the inert gas (such as nitrogen) filled inside the pneumatic rod. Legitimate products can withstand pressures of over a thousand kilograms. However, inferior pneumatic rods have two major hidden dangers:

  1. Gas Composition Substitution: Unscrupulous manufacturers may replace the inert nitrogen with compressed air. The oxygen in the air accelerates the oxidation of the metal inner wall, making the steel brittle and reducing its structural strength.
  2. Pressure Accumulation and Friction-Generated Heat: The heat generated by daily lifting friction further increases the internal pressure. When the pressure exceeds the tolerance limit of the inferior pneumatic rod, an explosion may occur.

Typical Cases and Hazards

Pneumatic rod explosion incidents are mostly caused by component defects and have severe consequences:

  • In the 2013 case of Ms. Liu in Fujian, after an inferior pneumatic rod exploded, a steel tube with a diameter of about 2 centimeters shot out and penetrated her lower body, causing serious injuries.
  • Similar incidents also occurred in Zhoushan, Zhejiang in 2007, Jiaozhou, Shandong in 2009, and Anhui in 2017, all related to substandard pneumatic rod quality.

Preventive Measures and Purchase Recommendations

To reduce risks, the following preventive measures should be taken:

  1. Choose Legitimate Products: Prioritize the purchase of branded swivel chairs priced above 200 yuan and avoid low-priced, inferior products. Legitimate manufacturers usually use qualified pneumatic rods and mark them with safety certification information.
  2. Check Pneumatic Rod Performance: When testing, observe whether the lifting is smooth without jams or abnormal noises. If lifting is difficult or there is air leakage, there may be component defects.
  3. Confirm Explosion-Proof Design: Check whether a explosion-proof steel plate with a thickness of at least 2 millimeters is installed between the seat cushion and the pneumatic rod. This steel plate can block fragment splatter in the event of a pneumatic rod explosion, reducing the risk of injury.

Pneumatic rod explosions, although rare, have severe consequences. By following standardized purchase procedures and conducting regular inspections, such risks can be effectively avoided.
