Office Chair Explosion Risk

Admin October 22, 2026

"Office Chair Explosion Risk" refers to the phenomenon of explosion in office swivel and lifting chairs, which is essentially an explosion of the gas spring and can cause serious harm to the human body.

Explosion Hazards

The hazards of office chair explosions are immense, with several severe incidents having occurred. In 2013, Ms. Liu from Xiamen, after taking a shower, sat on a swivel chair purchased online to blow-dry her hair. The chair suddenly exploded, with the gas spring piercing through the seat like a projectile. A steel nail directly penetrated her lower body and entered her uterus, while over a dozen metal fragments were embedded in her abdomen, leaving doctors in shock during the debridement process. Additionally, a 14-year-old boy in Jiaozhou, Shandong, died after being pierced through the chest by an exploding chair's steel column, while a 68-year-old man in Yantai suffered severe injuries to his buttocks, requiring dozens of stitches to close the wounds. These cases fully demonstrate the potentially fatal consequences of office chair explosions, including injuries to multiple body parts, organ damage, and even life-threatening situations.

Explosion Causes

The primary culprit behind these swivel chair explosions is the gas spring beneath the chair. Reputable manufacturers fill their gas springs with inert nitrogen, which is stable and safe, capable of withstanding pressures of up to 2000 pounds and remaining problem-free even with daily repeated lifting and lowering. However, many unscrupulous merchants, seeking to cut costs, use compressed air instead of nitrogen, reducing costs to one-third of those of legitimate products but significantly increasing risks. This is because the oxygen in compressed air reacts chemically with the metal materials inside the gas spring, gradually eroding its inner walls and making the metal components increasingly brittle. Coupled with the friction-induced high temperatures generated by repeated lifting and lowering during daily use, the internal pressure of the gas spring continues to rise. Once it exceeds the bearing limit, an explosion can occur instantaneously.

To avoid such dangers, consumers should purchase office chairs from legitimate channels and products with quality guarantees, carefully reviewing product descriptions to confirm that the gas spring is filled with nitrogen. Additionally, during use, they should avoid improper operations such as excessive lifting, lowering, and collisions to reduce safety risks.
