Office Chair Explosion Risk
Admin October 14, 2026
"Office chair explosion risk" refers to the explosion of pneumatic lift office swivel chairs caused by component defects, which can cause serious injuries to the user's buttocks, rectum, and other parts.

Specific Cases:
- In 2007, in Zhoushan, Zhejiang, Ms. Lou's pneumatic chair exploded, and fragments penetrated her body up to ten centimeters.
- In 2009, in Jiaozhou, Shandong, a 14-year-old boy was fatally injured when the lifting rod of his pneumatic chair pierced his body during adjustment.
- In 2010, in Xiamen, Fujian, Ms. Liu suffered severe injuries when her pneumatic chair exploded while she was blow-drying her hair. Doctors removed more than ten fragments from her intestines.
Causes of Explosion:
- Quality Defects in Pneumatic Rods:
- The tube wall is too thin to withstand internal high pressure.
- The purity of inert gases (such as nitrogen) is insufficient, or they are replaced by compressed air, leading to unstable chemical properties.
- Poor sealing of the sealing ring causes air leakage, resulting in internal pressure imbalance.
- Improper Usage Conditions:
- Frequent lifting and lowering cause a sudden increase in the internal temperature of the pneumatic rod, leading to gas expansion and explosion.
- Long-term use leads to component aging, such as wear on the sealing ring and metal fatigue.
- Lack of Product Standards:
- According to a spot check by the State Administration for Market Regulation, the failure rate of office chairs reached 23.3% in 2020, with 17 batches being swivel chairs. The main issues were the non-compliance of pneumatic rods with high and low-temperature resistance standards and the lack of explosion-proof steel plates.
Preventive Measures:
- Purchase Genuine Products:
- Prioritize products priced above 200 yuan to avoid low-quality and cheap products.
- Ensure the product has passed national safety certifications (such as the GB/T 38733-2020 "Office Chair" standard).
- Inspect Key Components:
- Test the smoothness of the pneumatic rod's lifting and lowering without any jamming or abnormal noises.
- Confirm that an explosion-proof steel plate with a thickness of โฅ2 millimeters is installed between the seat cushion and the pneumatic rod to effectively block fragment splatter.
- Standardize Usage Habits:
- Avoid frequent lifting and lowering of the chair to reduce temperature fluctuations inside the pneumatic rod.
- Regularly inspect the appearance of the pneumatic rod. If tube wall dents, air leakage, or abnormal noises are found, stop using it immediately and replace it.
