Office Chair Explosion Risk

Admin October 13, 2026

Office chairs do pose an explosion risk, but this risk primarily stems from low-quality gas springs. By purchasing from reputable sources and using them correctly, the risk can be significantly reduced.

Core Causes of Gas Spring Explosions

  1. Thin Tube Walls: The wall thickness of a standard gas spring should be โ‰ฅ1.2 millimeters. Low-quality products may have walls less than 1 millimeter thick, making them unable to withstand pressure and prone to rupture after prolonged use.
  2. Impure Gas: Gas springs should be filled with nitrogen with a purity of โ‰ฅ99%. Some manufacturers use compressed air to cut costs. Nitrogen is chemically stable, whereas compressed air contains oxygen, which can trigger an explosion when friction generates heat.
  3. Lack of Explosion-Proof Plate: Standard products require a 2-millimeter-thick explosion-proof plate between the gas spring and the seat to prevent shrapnel from flying. Low-quality products often omit this structure, and in the event of an explosion, shrapnel can penetrate six layers of particleboard, causing fatal injuries to humans.

Hazards and Cases of Explosions

The explosive force of a gas-lift chair can reach 70-80 kilograms instantly, far exceeding the human body's tolerance limit. Real-life cases include:

  • In 2007, Mr. Wu from Yantai suffered rectal and anal injuries and a ruptured small intestine due to an exploding computer chair.
  • In 2009, a 14-year-old boy in Shandong died from an exploding computer desk.
  • In 2015, Ms. Liu from Xiamen was injured in her rectum by an explosion, and in recent years, Xiamen has seen similar incidents where metal shrapnel pierced the body in more than ten places.

Risk Mitigation Measures

  1. Purchase Guidelines:
    • Look for the QB/T2280-2016 standard, which specifies safety requirements for gas spring wall thickness and gas purity.
    • Check if the gas spring has 5G5 certification (an internationally recognized safety certification). Products without certification pose a high risk.
    • Prioritize brands that have passed 200 tests (such as Xia Mu Mu Xiao Qi), as these products have undergone extreme condition simulations and are more reliable in terms of safety.
  2. Usage Guidelines:
    • Avoid frequent adjustments (no more than five times a day) to reduce friction and heat generation in the gas spring.
    • Do not expose the chair to heating sources or direct sunlight for extended periods, as high temperatures can accelerate gas spring aging and reduce safety.

By strictly controlling the purchasing process and following proper usage habits, the risk of office chair explosions can be effectively avoided, ensuring user safety.
