Office Chair Explosion Probability

Admin October 09, 2026

The probability of office chair explosions is not a common statistical phenomenon, but poor-quality products pose significant safety risks, while the explosion risk of qualified products is extremely low.

Core Factors of Explosion Risk: Quality of Pneumatic Rods

Pneumatic rods are the primary risk source for office chair explosions, and their safety depends on three key indicators:

  1. Wall Thickness: National standards require the wall thickness of pneumatic rods to be โ‰ฅ2 millimeters. Poor-quality products may have a wall thickness of only about 1 millimeter, making them unable to withstand high pressure and prone to rupture after long-term use.
  2. Gas Purity: Qualified pneumatic rods must be filled with nitrogen with a purity of โ‰ฅ99%. Poor-quality products may use compressed air or oxygen mixtures. Nitrogen is chemically stable, while oxygen can easily trigger an explosion under high temperatures or friction.
  3. Explosion-Proof Steel Plate: Without an explosion-proof steel plate with a thickness of โ‰ฅ2 millimeters, fragments from a pneumatic rod explosion may directly penetrate the chair surface, causing bodily harm. The explosion-proof steel plate can effectively block flying fragments.

Non-Compliance Rate and Risk Distribution of Poor-Quality Products

According to sampling data from the State Administration for Market Regulation:

  • In 2020 and 2023, the non-compliance rate of office chairs reached 23.3%, with non-compliant swivel chair batches accounting for the vast majority (17 out of 17 batches and 21 batches, respectively).
  • The main reasons for non-compliance are substandard pneumatic rod quality (such as thin walls or impure gas) and the absence of explosion-proof steel plates, with these two issues accounting for more than 80% of the total non-compliance cases.

Usage Scenarios That Exacerbate Risks

  1. Frequent Adjustment Operations: Repeated friction of the piston inside the pneumatic rod may accelerate wall wear and reduce pressure-bearing capacity.
  2. Exposure to High-Temperature Environments: Long-term placement near heating sources or in direct sunlight can cause the gas inside the pneumatic rod to expand due to heat, increasing the explosion risk.

Safety Guarantees of Qualified Products

Office chairs that comply with national standards (such as QB/T2280-2016) and pass safety certifications (such as 5G5, SGS) must meet the requirements for wall thickness, gas purity, and explosion-proof steel plates for their pneumatic rods, resulting in an extremely low explosion risk. Consumers should prioritize purchasing products with certification marks and avoid long-term improper use.
