Office Chair Explosion Prevention

Admin October 19, 2026

For explosion prevention in office chairs, it is crucial to focus on the quality of the pneumatic rods, avoid using inferior products, and adopt standardized preventive measures.

Main causes of explosions in pneumatic lift swivel chairs:

  1. Physical defects in inferior pneumatic rods: Unscrupulous manufacturers reduce costs by using pneumatic rods with overly thin tube walls or by substituting high-purity inert nitrogen with ordinary compressed air. The oxygen in the air reacts with the metal inner wall through oxidation, leading to rusting and heat accumulation. This causes the internal pressure of the pneumatic rod to continuously rise, while the external tube wall becomes thinner and more brittle due to corrosion, ultimately resulting in an explosion.
  2. Unstable gas properties: Legitimate pneumatic rods are filled with high-purity nitrogen, which is stable and safe to control, capable of withstanding pressures up to 2000 pounds. In contrast, inferior products using compressed air have oxygen components that accelerate metal oxidation, creating a 'sealed pressure cooker' effect where pressure surges to a critical point before exploding.
  3. Risks associated with usage habits: Frequent lifting and lowering cause a sudden increase in the internal temperature of the pneumatic rod. If there are also tube wall defects or impure gases, this further exacerbates the risk of explosion. Although the probability of gas leakage in pneumatic rods is low, it can also lead to accidents due to pressure imbalances.

Typical case warnings:

  • In 2013, the pneumatic rod of a lift chair purchased online by Ms. Liu exploded, with a steel column piercing her body and leaving a large amount of metal debris in her abdominal cavity.
  • In 2009, a 14-year-old boy in Shandong suffered a pneumatic rod explosion while adjusting his seat, with the rod inserting into his body and causing vascular damage, leading to his death despite rescue efforts.
  • A lift chair used by a white-collar worker in Hangzhou exploded, with the pneumatic rod penetrating the seat and causing severe waist injuries, resulting in permanent disability. A pregnant woman in Quanzhou, Fujian, fell due to an explosion of an unbranded lift chair, ultimately leading to a miscarriage.

Preventive measures:

  1. Prioritize purchasing legitimate products: Choose office chairs priced above 200 yuan that have passed 3C certification, and avoid buying low-priced products without brands or unclear sources.
  2. Inspect the structure of the pneumatic rod: Ensure smooth lifting and lowering without jamming. Install an explosion-proof steel plate with a thickness of at least 2 millimeters between the seat cushion and the pneumatic rod to cushion the impact of an explosion.
  3. Purchase through legitimate channels: Retain shopping receipts to safeguard legal rights in case of accidents caused by quality issues.
