Injury from Office Chair Explosion

Admin October 11, 2026

Injuries caused by office chairs springing up are often related to the explosion of pneumatic lifting chairs, which can result in serious personal harm and even endanger lives.

There are two main reasons for the explosion of pneumatic lifting chairs:

Sealing and Gas Cylinder Wall Issues: If the sealing ring is not installed correctly or has poor sealing, it can lead to air leakage. At the same time, if the thickness of the gas cylinder wall does not meet safety standards (generally requiring โ‰ฅ2.0 millimeters), it may exceed its tolerance limit under pressure, triggering an explosion. For example, on the evening of April 20, 2007, Ms. Lou in Dinghai District, Zhoushan City, Zhejiang Province, experienced an explosion of the chair she was sitting on, with a large number of fragments embedding into her body. This may have been related to the thinness of the gas cylinder wall or poor sealing.

Gas Cylinder Structure and Material Issues: If there are defects in the structure or materials of the gas cylinder, such as the inclusion of inferior materials or aging parts, it may lead to cracks in the pneumatic rod. When a person sits down, the increased pressure may cause the chair to explode. Additionally, if oxygen is used instead of nitrogen to fill the pneumatic rod, oxygen can chemically react with the lubricating oil in the pneumatic pump during friction, creating an explosion risk. For example, on January 14, 2009, a 14-year-old boy named Xiaogang in Jiaozhou, Shandong, experienced an explosion while adjusting the height of his chair. The top rod penetrated his buttocks, injuring multiple blood vessels, and he ultimately died from excessive blood loss despite rescue efforts. This may have been related to issues with the gas cylinder structure or materials.

To avoid injuries caused by the explosion of pneumatic lifting chairs, consumers should choose reputable brands when purchasing to ensure reliable product quality. At the same time, regularly check the condition of the pneumatic rod and sealing ring, and replace them promptly if aging or damage is found. During use, avoid excessive adjustment of the pneumatic rod to reduce potential safety risks.
