Office Chair Explosion Injury

Admin October 08, 2026

The main causes of office chair explosion injuries are issues with the gas spring and improper use and maintenance. Details are as follows:

Gas Spring Filling Gas Issues: The main culprit behind office chair explosion injuries is usually the gas spring beneath the chair, which is essentially a miniature high-pressure vessel. Legitimate products are filled with relatively safe inert nitrogen gas, which has stable chemical properties and can withstand thousands of kilograms of pressure. However, unscrupulous manufacturers may substitute it with compressed air to reduce costs. The oxygen in the air has oxidizing properties that can erode the metal inner walls, making the steel brittle. Coupled with the heat generated by daily lifting and lowering friction, the internal pressure will rise steadily. Under conditions such as exposure to summer sun, sudden sitting, or the presence of tiny cracks inside, the gas spring may trigger an explosion, causing serious injuries. For example, in the case of Ms. Liu in Fujian Province in 2013, the chair exploded without warning, and a steel tube about two centimeters in diameter shot out like a projectile, piercing her lower body. Doctors removed variously shaped fragments from her abdomen, with several pieces of metal debris remaining in her intestines alone.

Improper Use and Maintenance: Improper use and maintenance are also significant contributing factors. Repeated and frequent lifting and lowering of the seat can cause friction-induced heat inside the gas spring, leading to excessive temperature and a sudden increase in pressure. Sitting too forcefully or frequently adjusting the lifting handle can also exert additional pressure on the gas spring. Cracks resulting from aging of the gas spring that are not promptly inspected and replaced also pose safety hazards.

Lack of Effective Isolation Devices: Some manufacturers, to reduce costs, do not install effective isolation devices between the gas spring and the seat cushion. Once the gas spring explodes, without the buffering effect of an isolation device, the impact force and fragments from the explosion will directly harm the human body, increasing the risk of injury during an explosion.
