Office Chair Explosion Incident
Admin October 12, 2026
Office chair explosion incidents have occurred multiple times, seriously threatening the lives of users.

I. Typical Cases
- On January 14, 2009, a 14-year-old boy was using an office chair normally when the pneumatic rod suddenly exploded, and a steel rod pierced his abdomen, ultimately leading to his death from excessive blood loss.
- In 2013, Ms. Liu was sitting on an online-purchased adjustable swivel chair to blow-dry her hair when the pneumatic rod exploded. A steel column with a diameter of 3 centimeters pierced through her body and into her abdominal cavity. Doctors removed more than ten metal fragments from her abdominal cavity and intestines.
- At 9:45 p.m. on August 11, 2013, a woman in Xiamen was also injured due to the explosion of the pneumatic rod of an adjustable chair.
II. Causes of Explosion
- Gas Filling Issues: According to regulations, the pneumatic rod should be filled with high-purity inert gas (such as nitrogen), and the seat height is adjusted by changing the pressure difference through a button. However, some unscrupulous merchants use air or other low-cost gases instead of inert gases to reduce costs. These gases are less stable and tend to expand under high temperatures or frequent friction, causing a sudden increase in internal pressure in the pneumatic rod.
- Material Quality Issues: Some merchants use low-quality metal materials to manufacture pneumatic rods, which have insufficient compressive strength. After long-term use, material fatigue or wear reduces structural stability, making it unable to withstand normal pressure and ultimately leading to explosion.
- Improper Use: Frequent adjustment of the seat height, prolonged sitting in the same position, or violent use (such as sitting down hard or jumping) can accelerate wear on the pneumatic rod and increase the risk of explosion.
III. Preventive Measures
- Choose Genuine Products: When purchasing, confirm whether the pneumatic rod has passed safety certifications (such as SGS or TUV certification) and avoid choosing unbranded products.
- Regular Inspection and Maintenance: Check the surface of the pneumatic rod for cracks, deformation, or air leakage. If any abnormalities are found, stop using it immediately.
- Standardize Usage Habits: Avoid frequent adjustment of the seat height, reduce violent use behaviors, and regularly clean dust from the surface of the pneumatic rod to reduce friction risks.
