Office Chair Explosion Causing Hip Injury
Cases of hip injuries caused by office chair explosions do exist, and are mostly related to the substandard quality of the gas springs in pneumatic lifting chairs.

It is not uncommon for pneumatic lifting chairs to explode and cause hip injuries. For example, in 2007, a 68-year-old man in Yantai, Shandong, suffered severe injuries to his hips and legs when the pneumatic lifting chair he was sitting on exploded. In 2009, a 14-year-old boy in Jiaozhou, Shandong, was fatally injured when a top rod pierced his hip during an explosion while adjusting a pneumatic chair, ultimately leading to death from excessive blood loss. Additionally, similar incidents have occurred in Fujian and Xiamen, where victims suffered severe hip injuries and even required surgery to remove chair fragments.
The root cause of pneumatic lifting chair explosions lies in the substandard quality of the product's gas springs (gas struts). Some companies cut costs by skimping on key components, resulting in serious safety hazards in the gas springs. Specifically, a thin wall of the gas spring reduces its load-bearing capacity, making it prone to rupture during normal use or frequent lifting and lowering. Insufficient purity of inert gases or their replacement with compressed air affects the stability and safety of the gas spring, increasing the risk of explosion. Moreover, frequent lifting and lowering, which cause a sudden rise in temperature, may lead to a sharp increase in internal pressure within the gas spring, exceeding its limit and causing an explosion.
To prevent similar incidents, consumers should choose reputable brands and channels when purchasing pneumatic lifting chairs to ensure reliable product quality. At the same time, they should avoid frequent lifting and lowering or excessive force during adjustment to reduce the risk of damage and explosion to the gas spring. Additionally, regularly inspecting the condition of the pneumatic lifting chair and promptly replacing or repairing it if any abnormalities are found are also important measures to ensure safety during use.
