Office Chair Explosion Due to Gas Spring Issues

Admin October 11, 2026

Explosions of office chairs due to issues with gas springs can indeed cause serious injuries and even be life-threatening.

The gas spring is a core component for the height adjustment function of office chairs. It is typically filled with high-pressure nitrogen gas internally, enabling smooth height adjustment of the chair through pressure differences. However, if the gas spring has quality issues or is used improperly, it may trigger an explosion, leading to severe consequences.

The main causes of gas spring explosions include material defects and gas contamination. A proper gas spring should be made of high-strength seamless steel tubes and filled with high-purity nitrogen gas. However, some low-quality products may use low-strength steel tubes or mix in oxygen to reduce costs. Oxygen is flammable and, when in contact with flammable substances such as internal lubricants, can trigger a violent explosion under high-pressure conditions. Additionally, insufficient wall thickness of the steel tube or defects in the welding process can also reduce the pressure-bearing capacity of the gas spring, increasing the risk of explosion.

The impact force of an explosion is extremely strong and can be fatal. Experiments have shown that the explosion impact force of a qualified gas spring can reach several tons, sufficient to penetrate wooden boards or human bones. For example, Ms. Liu in Xiamen was pierced in the lower body by a flying steel column from an explosion, and doctors removed more than ten metal fragments from her body; in 2009, a 14-year-old boy in Jiaozhou, Shandong, died after a gas spring exploded and penetrated his body through the buttocks. These cases demonstrate that the destructive power of a gas spring explosion far exceeds the human body's tolerance limit, potentially causing open wounds, internal organ damage, and even death.

Preventive measures are crucial. Consumers should choose products that have passed international certifications such as SGS and TUV and avoid purchasing "three-no" office chairs (products with no manufacturer name, no production address, and no production license). Before use, check the surface of the gas spring for cracks, rust, or air leakage. Avoid frequently adjusting the chair height to reduce wear on the gas spring. Regularly inspect the stability of the gas spring, and if any looseness or abnormal noise is detected, stop using it immediately and contact after-sales service. By using and maintaining the chair properly and regularly, the risk of gas spring explosions can be effectively reduced.
