Office Chair Explosion

Admin October 09, 2026

Office chair explosions are extremely dangerous, primarily due to issues with the design and use of the gas spring, requiring high attention and preventive measures.

The gas spring is essentially a miniature high-pressure container that relies on internal gas to push a piston for seat height adjustment. Legitimate products use high-purity inert nitrogen, which is stable and can withstand pressures of up to 2000 pounds. However, some unscrupulous manufacturers reduce costs by replacing nitrogen with ordinary compressed air. The oxygen in the air reacts with the metal inner wall, causing rust and heat buildup, which continuously increases the internal pressure of the gas spring, making the outer tube wall thinner and more brittle, ultimately leading to an explosion similar to a pressure cooker.

The consequences of an office chair explosion are extremely severe. In 2013, Ms. Liu in Xiamen was sitting on an online-purchased adjustable swivel chair while blow-drying her hair when the gas spring suddenly exploded. A steel rod with a diameter of 3 centimeters pierced through her body like a projectile, resulting in the removal of more than a dozen metal fragments from her abdomen and intestines. Similar accidents have occurred more than 40 times over the past decade, all caused by the gas spring exploding from the bottom and piercing through the human body. Expert experiments show that the impact force released instantly by the gas pressure can penetrate multiple layers of density board, with unimaginable consequences if it hits a person.

Some improper behaviors during daily use can accelerate wear on the gas spring and increase the risk of explosion. Actions such as sitting down forcefully or frequently adjusting the height can impose additional pressure on the gas spring. To avoid such accidents, when purchasing a chair, choose reputable brands and ensure that the gas spring has a qualified label, avoiding the temptation to save money or take shortcuts. During use, do not operate the chair violently or disassemble the gas spring without authorization. If the chair makes a hissing sound, wobbles unsteadily, or exhibits other abnormal conditions, replace it promptly and do not continue using it to avoid danger.
