Office Chair Explosion

Admin October 08, 2026

The term 'office chair explosion' mainly refers to the sudden explosive phenomenon of pneumatic lift swivel chairs caused by component defects, often due to inferior pneumatic rods, which can cause serious bodily injuries or even endanger lives in severe cases.

Causes of Explosion

  1. Thin Wall of Pneumatic Rod
To reduce costs, inferior pneumatic rods use steel with insufficient wall thickness, which cannot withstand the high internal pressure (especially when inert nitrogen is replaced by compressed air), making them prone to rupture under frequent lifting or external impact. For example, the wall thickness of a standard pneumatic rod is usually โ‰ฅ2 millimeters, while that of inferior products may be less than 1 millimeter, significantly reducing their pressure resistance.

  2. Unqualified Gas Composition
Standard pneumatic rods are filled with inert nitrogen, which is chemically stable and can withstand 2000 pounds of pressure without bursting easily. However, inferior products may use compressed air instead of nitrogen. The oxygen in the air can trigger oxidation reactions under high temperatures or friction, causing a sudden increase in internal pressure and ultimately leading to an explosion similar to that of a pressure cooker.

  3. Temperature Increase Due to Frequent Lifting
The gas inside the pneumatic rod heats up when compressed. If users frequently adjust the seat height (e.g., more than 10 times per hour) or maintain a seated position for an extended period, causing continuous pressure on the pneumatic rod, the internal temperature may exceed the tolerance limit of the rod wall, triggering an explosion.

Preventive Measures

  1. Choose Standard Products
Prioritize purchasing branded swivel chairs priced above 200 yuan and avoid buying 'three-no' products (those without a production date, quality certificate, or manufacturer). Standard products usually pass national safety certifications, ensuring more reliable materials and gas compositions for the pneumatic rods.

  2. Inspect Pneumatic Rod Performance
Observe whether the lifting is smooth without any stuttering or abnormal noises during use. If there is significant resistance or metallic friction sounds during lifting, it may indicate damage to the internal structure of the pneumatic rod or abnormal gas composition, and use should be stopped immediately.

  3. Confirm Installation of Explosion-Proof Steel Plate
Standard products install an explosion-proof steel plate with a thickness of โ‰ฅ2 millimeters between the seat cushion and the pneumatic rod. Even if the pneumatic rod explodes, the steel plate can block flying debris and reduce the risk of injury. When purchasing, you can request the merchant to provide a product cross-section diagram or disassemble it for verification.
