Office Chair Explosion
Admin October 12, 2026
Office chair explosion refers to the sudden explosive phenomenon of pneumatic lift-type office chairs caused by component defects, mostly due to inferior pneumatic rods, and requires high attention to its hazards and prevention.

Causes of Explosion
Pneumatic rods are essentially miniature high-pressure vessels. Legitimate products are filled with high-purity inert nitrogen, capable of withstanding 2000 pounds of pressure, with wall thickness, material strength, and gas stability all meeting safety standards. However, inferior products have three major hazards:
- Material Defects: The wall of the pneumatic rod is too thin to withstand internal high pressure. After prolonged use, metal fatigue intensifies, making it prone to bursting at the bottom.
- Gas Substitution: Using compressed air instead of nitrogen, oxygen corrodes the metal inner wall, turning the pneumatic rod into a continuously pressurized 'pressure cooker', ultimately leading to explosion due to the thinning and brittleness of the outer wall.
- Improper Use: Frequent lifting and lowering causing a sudden temperature rise, or violent operations (such as sitting abruptly or rapidly adjusting the height) may trigger internal pressure imbalance and accelerate component damage.
Typical Cases and Hazards
Over the past decade, more than forty similar tragedies have occurred in China. For example:
- In 2013, Ms. Liu in Fujian Province was sitting on a purchased online swivel chair with a lift function while blow-drying her hair when the pneumatic rod suddenly burst, piercing her body with a steel rod 3 centimeters in diameter. Dozens of metal fragments were removed from her abdomen and intestines.
- In 2009, a 14-year-old boy in Jiaozhou, Shandong, died from excessive blood loss after a top rod pierced his abdomen while adjusting a pneumatic chair. Such accidents are mostly caused by the pneumatic rod of the seat bursting from the bottom and piercing the human body, posing a serious threat to life safety.
Preventive Measures
- Purchase Legitimate Products: Prioritize office chairs priced above 200 yuan with 3C certification or SGS test reports, and avoid buying unbranded products.
- Check Pneumatic Rod Quality:
- Test the smoothness of lifting and lowering without jamming or abnormal noises;
- Ensure that a blast-proof steel plate with a thickness of โฅ2 millimeters is installed between the seat cushion and the pneumatic rod to effectively block fragment splatter.
- Standardize Usage Habits: Avoid violent operations (such as sitting abruptly or rapid rotation) or unauthorized disassembly of the pneumatic rod; when not in use for a long time, adjust the chair to the lowest height to reduce internal pressure.
- Regular Maintenance and Inspection: Check the surface of the pneumatic rod for cracks or deformation every six months. If air leakage or abnormal lifting is detected, stop using it immediately and replace the components.
