Office Chair Explosion

Admin October 10, 2026

Office chair explosions mainly refer to sudden explosive incidents in pneumatic lift swivel chairs caused by component defects, most commonly occurring in low-quality pneumatic rods.

Causes of Explosions

  1. Design Flaws in Pneumatic Rods: The tube walls of pneumatic rods are too thin to withstand high internal gas pressure (especially when the purity of inert gas is insufficient or replaced by compressed air). Oxygen in compressed air corrodes the metal inner walls, making the steel brittle and reducing structural strength.
  2. Gas Filling Issues: Legitimate products are filled with inert nitrogen, capable of withstanding thousands of kilograms of pressure; inferior products may use compressed air instead, with its oxygen content accelerating metal corrosion. Additionally, heat generated from daily lifting friction further increases internal pressure.
  3. Usage Environment and Operation: Frequent lifting causes sudden temperature increases, or external factors such as summer sun exposure or sudden sitting down can be the 'final straw' triggering an explosion. For example, tiny internal cracks may rapidly expand under high pressure, leading to tube wall rupture.

Typical Cases

  • 2007: Seat explosion incident in Zhoushan, Zhejiang Province;
  • 2009: A 14-year-old boy in Jiaozhou, Shandong Province, died after a pressure rod from an adjustable chair pierced his body;
  • 2013: Ms. Liu in Fujian Province suffered a steel tube penetrating her lower body when her swivel chair exploded while she was drying her hair;
  • 2017: An office chair explosion in Anhui Province damaged a computer case;
  • 2020: The State Administration for Market Regulation found explosion risks in staff chairs produced by some companies during inspections.
    According to statistics, over 40 similar accidents have occurred in China over the past decades.

Preventive Measures

  1. Choose Legitimate Products: Prioritize products priced above 200 yuan from manufacturers with safety certifications (such as SGS, BIFMA) and avoid purchasing cheap, 'three-no' chairs.
  2. Inspect Key Components:
    • Ensure smooth lifting and lowering of the pneumatic rod without jamming;
    • A blast-proof steel plate with a thickness of โ‰ฅ2 mm should be installed between the seat cushion and the pneumatic rod to block explosive fragments.
  3. Standardize Usage and Maintenance:
    • Avoid violent operations (such as pressing hard or frequent lifting);
    • Do not disassemble the pneumatic rod without authorization;
    • Regularly inspect the appearance of the pneumatic rod (such as for cracks or deformation) after long-term use.

By strictly controlling product quality and usage norms, the risk of pneumatic lift chair explosions can be effectively reduced.
