Office Chair Explosion

Admin October 10, 2026

The term 'office chair explosion' typically refers to the sudden bursting phenomenon in pneumatic lift swivel chairs caused by component defects, most commonly occurring in low-quality gas cylinders.

Explosion Mechanism and Causes

The core component of a pneumatic lift chair is the gas cylinder, essentially a miniature high-pressure vessel functioning similarly to a bicycle pump: it achieves height adjustment by using internal high-pressure gas to push a piston. Legitimate products are filled with inert nitrogen, capable of withstanding thousands of kilograms of pressure and chemically stable, minimizing reactions with the metal interior. However, inferior products may substitute compressed air, where oxygen accelerates metal oxidation, weakening the steel; frequent lifting generates frictional heat, further increasing internal pressure. When the cylinder wall is too thin, contains micro-cracks, or faces external impacts like summer heat exposure or sudden sitting, pressure may exceed critical thresholds, triggering an explosion.

Key causes include:

  1. Gas cylinder quality defects: Insufficient wall thickness (national standards require โ‰ฅ2mm), substandard steel strength, or impure inert gas (replaced by compressed air).
  2. Usage environment and habits: Prolonged sun exposure, frequent lifting causing rapid temperature increases, or sudden sitting generating impact forces.
  3. Design flaws: Absence of explosion-proof steel plates (legitimate products require a โ‰ฅ2mm-thick steel plate between the seat cushion and gas cylinder as a final safety barrier).

Typical Cases and Hazards

The earliest explosion case dates back to Zhoushan, Zhejiang in 2007, followed by severe incidents nationwide: a teenager in Jiaozhou, Shandong died from a piston rod piercing his body in 2009; a woman in Fujian suffered a steel tube penetrating her lower body in 2013; an office chair explosion in Anhui damaged a computer case in 2017; and market inspections in 2020 revealed explosion risks in some staff chairs. During explosions, metal components inside the gas cylinder may eject at high speed, causing penetrating injuries, fractures, or internal organ damage, posing extreme hazards.

Preventive Measures

  1. Purchase legitimate products: Prioritize brands priced above 200 yuan with national safety certifications (e.g., SGS, BIFMA), avoiding 'three-no' products (no brand, no factory, no certification).
  2. Inspect gas cylinder performance: Lifting should be smooth without jamming or abnormal noises; press the seat cushion to feel the support of the explosion-proof steel plate (significant indentation may indicate absence or insufficient thickness).
  3. Avoid extreme usage: Avoid prolonged sun exposure, maintain gentle movements during lifting, and prevent sudden sitting or excessive force.
  4. Regular maintenance: Immediately discontinue use and replace the gas cylinder if leaks, rust, or abnormal lifting are detected.
