Office Chair Explosion
The situation of office chairs exploding and sending people flying does exist, mainly involving explosion incidents of pneumatic lifting chairs, which pose certain safety hazards.

Explosions of pneumatic lifting chairs are not isolated cases; related accidents have occurred in multiple places. For example, in Zhoushan, Zhejiang, a newly purchased lifting chair in a resident's home exploded suddenly after just 7 days of use. The female homeowner was propelled by the impact force, her pants were torn open with a large hole, and her body sustained a 10-centimeter-deep wound. In Xiamen, a woman sitting on a lifting chair to blow-dry her hair experienced a sudden chair burst, with a 20-centimeter-long lifting component directly piercing her body and more than ten fragments embedding into her intestines. These cases demonstrate that explosions of pneumatic lifting chairs can cause severe harm to the human body.
The inspection results from the State Administration for Market Regulation also confirm the prevalence of the issue. Among the 90 batches of office chairs inspected from 90 enterprises across 11 provinces and cities, 21 batches had quality issues, with an unqualified rate as high as 23.3%. These unqualified products may pose explosion and other safety hazards.
The core issue behind the explosions of pneumatic lifting chairs lies in the substandard quality of the pneumatic rods that control the lifting. Normally, pneumatic rods are filled with stable nitrogen gas, which is chemically inactive and does not easily react with other substances under normal temperature and pressure conditions, ensuring the stable operation of the pneumatic rods. However, inferior pneumatic rods may explode due to unstable gases or structural defects. Some unscrupulous merchants, aiming to reduce costs, fill the pneumatic rods with unstable compressed air or other gases. These gases are prone to violent reactions when exposed to high temperatures, high pressure, or external impacts, causing a sharp increase in internal pressure within the pneumatic rods and triggering explosions. Additionally, defects such as unreasonable structural design and poor material quality of the pneumatic rods also reduce their pressure resistance and stability, increasing the risk of explosions.
To avoid such dangers, consumers should choose regular channels and well-known brands when purchasing pneumatic lifting chairs and check whether the products have quality certificates and relevant inspection reports. Meanwhile, during use, they should avoid subjecting the chairs to violent impacts, refrain from keeping them in high-temperature environments for extended periods, and regularly inspect the appearance and performance of the pneumatic rods, replacing them promptly if any abnormalities are found.
