Office Chair Exercise Recommendations

Admin October 12, 2026

Here are some exercise recommendations suitable for performing on an office chair, which can help alleviate physical discomfort caused by prolonged sitting and shape a good posture:

1. Chair Yoga Chair yoga is a low-intensity exercise designed specifically for office settings. Through simple seated or chair-supported movements, it can relieve back and waist pain within 10 minutes. For example, seated forward bends (placing both hands on the chair surface and slowly bending forward to stretch the back) or seated twists (placing both hands on the chair back and slowly rotating the upper body to one side) can effectively relax the shoulder, neck, and waist muscles and improve blood circulation.

2. Seated Stretching Exercises The 10-minute office stretching routine designed by Eylem Abaci includes 20 movements, each lasting 30 seconds, and can be completed without getting up. Key movements include:

  • Neck Stretch: Use your right hand to pull your head to the right, feeling the stretch in the left side of your neck. Hold for 5 seconds and then switch sides.
  • Wrist Relaxation: Clench your hands into fists and then open them, repeating 10 times to relieve stiffness caused by keyboard use.
  • Seated Cat-Cow Pose: Place your hands on your knees, arch your back and lift your head while inhaling, and then round your back and lower your head while exhaling to dynamically adjust the pressure on your spine. These movements can specifically relieve muscle stiffness and correct poor postures such as rounded shoulders and hunchback.

3. Chair Exercises By adjusting your sitting posture and using the edge of the chair for strength training, you can achieve local shaping effects:

  • Back Straightening Training: Sit lightly on one-third of the chair surface, grab the chair back with both hands, arch your back and expand your chest while inhaling, hold for 5 seconds and then relax. Repeat 5 times to strengthen the back muscles and improve rounded shoulders.
  • Shoulder Shaping: Grab the edge of the chair with one hand, exhale deeply and tilt your body to the opposite side, feeling the stretch in your arm and side waist. Hold for 5 seconds on each side to help shape your shoulder lines.
  • Calf Shaping: If the chair is stable, you can hold the chair back and rise up on your tiptoes, repeating 20 times to exercise the calf muscles on the back of your legs.
  • Abdomen and Leg Strengthening: Hold the chair handles with both hands, slowly lift your feet together until they are parallel to the ground, hold for 3 seconds and then lower them. Repeat 10 times to strengthen your abdominal and thigh muscles.
  • Lumbar Spine Protection: When resting, grab the chair back with both hands and kick one foot backward to the limit. Alternate 30 times on each side to relax the muscles around the lumbar spine and prevent lumbar muscle strain caused by prolonged sitting.

Precautions:

  • Ensure the chair is stable before exercising to avoid the risk of sliding or tipping over.
  • Keep the range of motion comfortable for yourself to avoid excessive stretching and injury.
  • It is recommended to get up and move around for 5 minutes every hour. Combining chair exercises can more comprehensively alleviate the hazards of prolonged sitting.
