European Certification for Office Chairs

Admin October 11, 2026

The European certification for office chairs centers around the EN1335 standard, covering three key dimensions: ergonomics, structural safety, and mechanical performance, which are crucial for market access in the European Union.

I. Core Components of the EN1335 Standard

EN1335 is a systematic safety standard developed by the European Union specifically for office chairs, consisting of three parts:

  1. EN1335-1: Ergonomic Dimensional Specifications
This part specifies basic parameters such as seat height, backrest height, and seat depth to ensure suitability for users of different body types. Recent revisions have added requirements for adjustable lumbar support height, for example, the backrest must support at least a 5-centimeter vertical adjustment range to accommodate the lumbar curves of individuals of varying heights.

  2. EN1335-2: Structural and Material Safety Requirements
It includes over ten testing methods, such as stability tests (e.g., chair wheel resistance tests) and durability cycle tests (e.g., 100,000 pressure impacts on the seat and 120,000 cycle operations of the recline mechanism), simulating typical wear scenarios over a ten-year lifespan. For instance, chair wheels must complete 100,000 rolling tests under a 50-kilogram load to ensure long-term smooth operation without jamming or breakage.

  3. EN1335-3: Mechanical Testing Methods
Reliability is verified through strength and durability tests, such as the "drop impact test" (a 25-kilogram metal block dropped from a height of 200 millimeters onto the seat 100 times), 120,000 forward-and-backward rocking tests of the seat, and 100,000 backward-leaning tests of the backrest. After testing, the chair frame must be inspected for cracks or deformation to ensure structural stability.

II. Certification Process and Compliance Requirements

Enterprises must send their products to laboratories with ISO17025 accreditation for EN1335 testing. After obtaining the report, they must prepare a Declaration of Conformity (DoC) in accordance with the EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC and affix the CE mark before entering the EU market. It should be noted that EN1335 does not include flame retardancy testing, but some countries (such as the UK and Germany) require additional passing of EN1021-1/2 (cigarette and match flame retardancy tests). Exporting enterprises need to supplement testing items according to the regulations of the target country.

III. Significance of the Standard and Its Industry Impact

EN1335 verifies the long-term reliability of office chairs in advance by simulating real-world usage scenarios (such as normal stress and reasonable abuse), reducing user risks. This standard not only serves as a market access threshold in the EU but is also incorporated into the quality control systems of leading global office furniture brands, driving the industry to enhance safety and quality standards.
