Collapse of Office Chair Edge
Admin October 09, 2026
The collapse of the edge of an office chair can be resolved through targeted repair methods, with the specific approach depending on the degree of collapse.

I. Self-Adjustment and Repair
- Tightening the Mesh Surface: If the chair is made of mesh fabric, edge collapse is often caused by mesh looseness. Use nylon cable ties to pass through the mesh weaving holes from the bottom of the chair and tighten the collapsed area in sections. Utilize the principle of bandages to restore mesh tension and enhance support.
- Adding a Support Layer: Place a 5mm-thick EVA foam or hard plastic board under the collapsed edge to disperse pressure, reduce local stress, and compensate for insufficient support.
- Adjusting Fixed Bandages: For mesh cushions, locate the fixed bandages beneath the cushion. Tighten the screws or re-cross and tighten the bandages to adjust the tightness and restore support.
II. Repair Techniques for Mild to Moderate Collapse
- Patting and Kneading: If the collapse is caused by the compaction of filling materials (such as sponge), gently pat or knead the collapsed area to help the internal fibers fluff up again and restore elasticity.
- Air Drying and Ventilation: If the collapse is due to moisture-induced deformation (such as in humid southern environments), move the chair to a well-ventilated area for air drying (avoid direct sunlight) to promote moisture evaporation from the materials and restore shape.
- Re-filling: Open the outer fabric of the cushion, supplement or replace it with professional filling materials (such as high-density sponge), ensure even filling, and then re-seal it to restore support.
III. Suggestions for Handling Severe Collapse
- Contacting After-sales Service or Replacement: If the collapse depth exceeds 1 centimeter, there is a noticeable 'sinking feeling' when sitting down, or the support structure (such as springs or frame) is damaged, self-repair may have limited effectiveness. It is recommended to contact after-sales service for repair or directly replace the cushion.
- Purchasing a New Cushion: Prioritize choosing high-density sponge cushions (density is a key indicator). The higher the density, the stronger the support and durability, reducing the risk of future collapse.
IV. Preventive Measures
- Controlling Usage Weight: Avoid overloading (most office chairs have a weight limit of 100-120kg) to prevent excessive stress on the support structure.
- Regularly Rotating the Force Direction: Rotate the front and back directions of the chair surface every 3 months to balance the force-bearing areas and prevent local long-term pressure from causing collapse.
- Proper Cleaning: When cleaning, use a damp cloth to wipe the mesh surface and avoid using hard brushes that may damage the elastic fibers, extending the service life of the materials.
