Office Chair Drops by Itself

Admin October 10, 2026

When sitting on an office chair, it automatically descends. The most common causes are aging or poor sealing of the gas lift rod, which is a normal wear-and-tear phenomenon. Specific faults need to be diagnosed through inspection, and then repair or replacement can be chosen.

Specific Fault Causes

  1. Aging or Wear of the Seal Ring: After long-term use, the seal ring inside the gas lift rod ages, leading to leakage of high-pressure nitrogen gas. Insufficient air pressure makes it impossible to maintain the locked state.
  2. Poor Quality of the Gas Lift Rod: The gas lift rods used in low-priced products may have issues such as insufficient purity of nitrogen gas and insufficient thickness of the cylinder wall, resulting in unreliable initial performance.
  3. Loose Adjustment Screw: The adjustment screw connected to the gas lift rod is loose, affecting the overall structural stability, but usually not causing regular automatic descent.
  4. Common Problem of Low-Priced and Inferior Products: For chairs priced below 200 yuan for a long time, the materials and workmanship of core components are difficult to guarantee, and such problems are likely to occur after a period of use.

Handling Path

  1. Basic Inspection to Diagnose the Problem:

    • Listen for Sounds and Feel: Check for a hissing air leak sound or metallic friction and jamming noises during lifting or sitting still.
    • Observe the Descent Pattern: Slow and continuous descent is mostly due to air leakage in the gas lift rod; sudden drops may involve serious damage to the internal structure.
    • Check Mechanical Connections: Confirm whether the connections between the gas lift rod and the five-star base, as well as the chair base, are loose. Loose screws usually do not cause regular descent.
  2. Choose Repair or Replacement:

    • Contact the Official After-Sales Service:
      • During the Warranty Period: Directly contact the brand's customer service. Mainstream brands provide a 3-5 year warranty for core components such as the gas lift rod, and you can enjoy free repair or replacement.
      • After the Warranty Period: Inquire about paid repair or purchase original factory parts to ensure model matching.
    • Replace the Gas Lift Rod Yourself: If the chair is out of warranty and the official repair cost is high, you can replace it yourself. Pay attention to the following during operation:
      • Safely Remove the Old Gas Lift Rod (the most difficult step).
      • Measure Parameters: Accurately measure the outer diameter of the failed gas lift rod (e.g., ฮฆ28mm is suitable for weights within 70kg, and ฮฆ35mm has a rated ultimate load of 200kg). Look for the SAE304 certification number on the laser-marked part of the tube material to avoid using inferior 204 series rods that are prone to explosion.
      • Temporary Sealing: Cut a 0.5mm graphite lubricating sheet into a 10ร—30mm strip and wind it around the threaded base twice to form a physical wedge-shaped sealing strip, providing a buffer period of about 40 days.
      • Install the New Gas Lift Rod: Use a torque-limiting wrench to loosen the bolts. Do not use an impact electric wrench to damage the pneumatic threaded joint.

Safety Premise: It is strictly prohibited to disassemble, drill holes in, or repair a faulty gas lift rod by yourself. Improper operation due to its internal high-pressure state may cause an explosion.
