Office Chair Drop Test
The office chair drop test is a crucial method for quantitatively evaluating its structural durability and safety by simulating extreme impacts to verify product quality.

Test Purpose
It primarily assesses the impact fatigue resistance of the core components of office chairs, such as the height adjustment mechanism and chair legs. By simulating long-term repeated stress scenarios on the seat, it tests stability under extreme conditions, providing data support for manufacturers to optimize designs and helping consumers identify product safety.
Test Scope and Objects
Swivel chairs are the primary objects of testing, especially those equipped with gas spring height adjustment mechanisms. The testing scope covers the complete seat assembly, including the seat cushion, base plate, gas rod, five-star base, and casters, ensuring coordinated stability of the overall structure under impact.
Core Testing Items
Vertical drop durability testing is the core item, verifying whether the product experiences functional failure or structural damage through a specified number (e.g., 100,000 times) and frequency (10-20 times per minute) of cyclic drop impacts. Specific items include:
- Gas rod breakage: Testing the sealing and strength of the height adjustment mechanism under repeated impacts;
- Five-star base cracking: Evaluating the impact toughness of the chair leg material;
- Caster detachment: Verifying the firmness of connecting components.
Testing Methods
- Initial Setup: Place the office chair on a flat, hard surface and adjust the gas rod to its highest position to simulate the maximum impact height when a person leaves the seat.
- Drop Simulation: Use a dedicated drop testing machine to lift the seat surface to a specified height (usually an industry standard value) and release it to fall freely to the lowest position, generating impacts on the gas rod, five-star base, and other components.
- Cyclic Testing: Repeat the drop at the specified frequency until the total number of drops (e.g., 120,000 times) is reached.
- Result Inspection: During and after testing, check whether the height adjustment function operates smoothly and observe for any cracks, deformations, or damage to the components.
Testing Instruments
The primary reliance is on an office chair vertical drop testing machine, whose core components include:
- Rigid testing platform: Provides a stable drop surface;
- Adjustable clamping mechanism: Precisely controls the drop height;
- Cycle counter: Records the number of tests;
- Emergency stop safety device: Prevents accidents.
Testing Standards
The industry generally adopts the following standards:
- ANSI/BIFMA X5.1-2017: An American standard that specifies detailed parameters for vertical drop testing (e.g., drop height, frequency) and criteria for determining compliance;
- GB/T 22803-2008: A Chinese national standard that sets specific requirements for seat impact testing to ensure products meet domestic market safety regulations.
