Office Chair Drop

Admin October 08, 2026

The most common cause of an office chair dropping is the aging or poor sealing of the gas lift cylinder, resulting in the leakage of high-pressure nitrogen gas inside or the wear of the oil seal. You can use simple self-inspection methods to determine the type of fault and choose an official repair, self-replacement, or temporary repair solution according to the situation.

Simple Self-Inspection Methods

  1. Listen to the sound and feel: When raising, lowering, or sitting still, if you hear a hissing air leakage sound or a stuttering abnormal sound of metal friction, it may be due to the failure of the gas lift cylinder's seal or the wear of internal parts.
  2. Observe the dropping mode: A slow and continuous drop usually indicates a gas leak in the gas lift cylinder; a sudden drop without any resistance may involve serious damage to the internal structure, and use should be stopped immediately.
  3. Check the mechanical connections: Confirm whether the screws at the connections between the gas lift cylinder, the five-star base, and the chair base are loose. Loose screws may cause the chair to wobble but will not result in regular automatic dropping.

Core Solutions

  1. Contact the official after-sales service:
    • During the warranty period: Directly contact the brand's customer service. After describing the problem, you can get free repair or replacement of parts.
    • After the warranty period: Inquire about paid repair services or channels to purchase original gas lift cylinders. Prioritize official parts to ensure safety.
  2. Replace the gas lift cylinder yourself:
    • Operation steps: Turn the chair upside down on a soft pad and use a rubber mallet to tap the metal base or the side of the steel ring at the connection to loosen it. If this is ineffective, use a pipe wrench to clamp the gas rod (pad it with cloth to prevent scratches) and rotate it counterclockwise to unscrew it.
    • Key reminder: Do not directly tap the body of the gas rod to avoid damaging the internal high-pressure structure. Wear safety goggles and gloves during operation to prevent accidental injuries.

Temporary Repair Methods

  1. Use a hose clamp: Wrap a hose clamp around the cylinder, enhance the grip with a rubber band or tape, and tighten it before testing the stability.
  2. Use PVC pipes: Measure the diameter and length of the cylinder, purchase a slightly larger PVC pipe, saw it open lengthwise, and fit it over the cylinder and secure it.

Safety Precautions

  • Do not disassemble the gas lift cylinder yourself: The high-pressure nitrogen gas inside may cause an explosion, and non-professionals operating it face extremely high risks.
  • Prioritize official channels: Self-replacement or temporary repairs are only suitable for out-of-warranty and emergency situations. For long-term use, ensure that the quality of the gas lift cylinder meets safety standards.
