What to Do with Unused Office Chairs

Admin October 12, 2026

When office chairs are no longer needed, they can be handled through recycling, repair and reuse, environmentally friendly disposal, or other methods.

Recycling: If the external structure of the office chair is in good condition, you can contact local second-hand furniture markets for resale. Especially for brands like Herman Miller and Haworth, well-maintained second-hand chairs often fetch much higher prices than scrap recycling. Additionally, charitable organizations accept donations and distribute office chairs to those in need, such as low-income families and students, achieving resource redistribution.

Repair and Reuse: If the structural damage to the office chair is not severe, repairs can extend its lifespan. For example, reinforce an idle old computer chair and add adjustable desk features to transform it into a lazy workstation; or replace the cracked wooden backrest to restore its functionality. Such modifications save costs and meet personalized needs.

Environmentally Friendly Disposal: For unusable office chairs, they should be disassembled and sorted. Metal and plastic components should be placed in corresponding recycling bins for professional processing. If the chair contains materials that are difficult to disassemble and in large quantities, contact professional environmental units for incineration. Private incineration is strictly prohibited, as some materials may release harmful gases, chemicals, or toxic substances when burned, causing severe environmental pollution.

Other Disposal Methods: Second-hand goods recycling companies typically have two disposal routes: one is to screen reusable furniture for second-hand sales or donations; the other is to hand it over to government-designated renewable resource recycling companies. If your new office needs chairs, consider the "old chair for new chair" model, where usable old chairs can be traded in for a discount on new purchases. This approach significantly reduces expenses compared to selling all as scrap and buying all new chairs.

The above disposal methods should be selected based on the actual condition of the office chair, usage needs, and environmental requirements to maximize resource utilization and achieve environmentally friendly disposal.
