Office Chair Disassembly

Admin October 08, 2026

The disassembly of an office chair requires targeted methods for different components. Here are the specific steps and precautions:

Wheel Disassembly

1. Basic Operation:
Turn the office chair upside down so that the seat faces downward. Be sure to place a soft cloth or foam board between the seat and the ground to avoid scratching the fabric or the seat structure. Grasp the wheel bracket (usually made of metal or plastic) with your hand and pull the wheel outward with even force. Most office chair wheels are designed with snap-in mechanisms and can be disassembled without tools.

2. Handling Special Cases:
If the wheel is difficult to pull out due to long-term use or aging of the snap-in mechanism, you can use a flat-head screwdriver to assist. Specifically, insert the tip of the screwdriver into the gap between the snap-in mechanism and the bracket. Place a soft cloth underneath to prevent scratching the surface of the bracket. Gently pry the edge of the snap-in mechanism. Once it is loose, you can pull out the wheel. Control the force during operation to avoid breaking the snap-in mechanism or deforming the bracket due to excessive force.

Base Disassembly and Replacement

1. Handling the Lifting Mechanism:
The base usually consists of a gas spring (the core component for the lifting function) and a five-star foot (the supporting structure). If you need to disassemble the base, you must first separate the connection between the gas spring and the seat. Some office chairs have a fixing screw at the top of the gas spring. You need to use a screwdriver of the corresponding size to loosen it and then remove the seat. If it is a snap-in connection, you can try gently tapping the joint between the seat and the gas spring with a rubber mallet to loosen it and then separate them.

2. Disassembling the Five-Star Foot:
The connection between the five-star foot and the gas spring is usually either threaded or secured with a snap-in mechanism. For a threaded connection, rotate the five-star foot counterclockwise until it is completely detached from the gas spring. For a snap-in connection, press the release button of the snap-in mechanism (if there is one) or use a screwdriver to pry the edge of the snap-in mechanism while pulling the five-star foot outward. It is recommended to take a photo of the original connection position before operation for reference during subsequent assembly.

Overall Disassembly Precautions

1. Scenarios without Professional Tools:
If you need to completely disassemble the office chair (such as separating the backrest and armrests), first check whether there are hidden screws or snap-in mechanisms on the chair body. Some ergonomic chairs adopt a modular design, and the armrests and backrest may be fixed to the chair frame with screws. You need to use a screwdriver of the corresponding model to loosen them and then remove them. For snap-in connections, use a plastic pry bar or your fingers to press the release part of the snap-in mechanism, and avoid using metal tools to prevent scratches.

2. Safety Tips:
Avoid violent operations during the disassembly process, especially for pressure-bearing components such as the gas spring, to prevent sudden release of internal gas and the ejection of parts. If the office chair has been used for a long time or shows signs of aging (such as gas leakage from the gas spring or cracking of plastic parts), it is recommended to contact professional maintenance personnel for handling to ensure operational safety.
