Office Chair Disassembly

Admin October 16, 2026

Disassembling an office chair is more difficult than assembling it, especially when it comes to separating parts like the gas rod and chair legs. However, it can be done smoothly by following the correct steps.

1. Backrest Separation

The backrest is usually connected to the seat cushion or other components via screws or clips. Before starting the disassembly, observe how the backrest is connected to the surrounding parts. If it is connected by screws, use an appropriate screwdriver to unscrew each screw securing the backrest one by one. Be sure to keep the screws safe to avoid losing them. If it is connected by clips, locate the position of the clips, and use a suitable tool, such as a small pry bar or the tip of a screwdriver, to gently insert it into the gap of the clip and slowly pry it open, separating the clip and thus detaching the backrest from the overall structure. The purpose of this step is to facilitate subsequent operations and reduce interference from other components during the disassembly process.

2. Base Removal

Raise the gas rod to its highest position. This will increase the space between the base and the gas rod, making it easier to disassemble. Hold the seat cushion tightly with one hand to ensure it does not wobble or fall during the operation. Press the lift lever with the other hand while gently shaking the base several times. Shaking will loosen the connection between the base and the gas rod. With continuous pressing of the lever and shaking, the base will gradually separate from the gas rod, completing the base removal.

3. Gas Rod Removal

After the base and the gas rod are successfully separated, place the chair legs upside down. This will make it more convenient to operate the gas rod. It is best to use a rubber mallet to knock out the gas rod. The elasticity of the rubber mallet can reduce damage to the gas rod and chair legs. If you do not have a rubber mallet, you can place a piece of wood between the gas rod and a hard object and then gently tap the wood with another suitable tool. The buffering effect of the wood will help knock the gas rod out of the chair legs.

4. Disassembly of Other Parts

Disassembling other parts of the chair is relatively simple. Just loosen the screws in the reverse order of assembly. However, when disassembling the seat and the gas rod, as well as the gas rod and the chair legs, be more careful and patient as they may be tightly fastened after long-term use. You can use some lubricant, such as WD - 40, and spray it on the connection parts. Wait a few minutes for the lubricant to penetrate, which will reduce the resistance during disassembly and make the process smoother.
