Office Chair Disassembly

Admin October 14, 2026

The disassembly of an office chair can be carried out step by step from the whole to the parts, with the specific steps as follows:

Separate the seat and the backrest First, locate the connecting screws between the seat and the backrest, which are usually located at the joint where the backrest meets the seat at the bottom. Use a suitable screwdriver to turn the fixing screws counterclockwise to separate the two. If it is an integrated backrest (such as some gaming chairs or minimalist designs), this step is not required, and you can proceed directly to the next step.

Remove the armrests The armrests are generally fixed to both sides of the seat with screws. Observe the positions of the screw holes where the armrests connect to the seat, and use a screwdriver to unscrew the screws one by one. Some armrests may have hidden screw designs, and you need to remove the surface decorative covers or cushions before operating. When disassembling, be sure to keep the screws to avoid losing them.

Separate the gas lift and the base Turn the chair completely upside down so that the base faces upwards. There are two ways to connect the gas lift and the base:

  1. Spring clip fixation: Use needle-nose pliers or a special tool to gently press the spring clip at the connection between the gas lift and the base, and at the same time, pull the gas lift upwards.
  2. Screw fixation: Simply unscrew the fixing screws at the connection and then separate the gas lift. If you need to disassemble the base, you first need to separate the backrest, and then raise the gas lift to its highest position. Hold the seat with one hand, press the height adjustment lever with the other hand and shake it. Once the base is loose, you can remove it. Pay attention to the force applied in this step to avoid damaging the internal structure of the gas lift.

Remove the casters The casters are usually directly inserted into the caster sockets of the base. There are two methods for removal:

  1. Direct pulling: Hold the casters with both hands and pull them out evenly with force.
  2. Assisted prying: If the casters are tightly stuck, you can insert a screwdriver into the gap between the casters and the caster sockets and gently pry the edges to loosen them before pulling them out. If you encounter rusted screws, you can first spray a rust remover (such as WD-40) and let it soak for 10-15 minutes, and then use tools to disassemble them. Be careful not to apply excessive force during operation to avoid deforming the parts.

Precautions

  1. It is recommended to take photos of the whole chair and the connection points of each part before disassembly for reference during subsequent assembly.
  2. Store small parts such as screws and spring clips separately to avoid confusion.
  3. If the chair has been used for a long time, some plastic parts may be aged and brittle, so handle them gently during disassembly.
  4. When assembling, operate in the reverse order and check whether the connections of each part are firm.
