Office Chair Dimensions and Height

Admin October 19, 2026

The standard height range for office chairs is typically 40-50 centimeters, with adjustable models (38-48 centimeters) recommended to accommodate different heights and usage scenarios.

I. National Standards and Common Ranges

According to national standards, the seat height of an office chair (the vertical distance from the highest point of the front edge of the seat to the ground) is usually between 40-50 centimeters. Some opinions suggest that the standard size is concentrated between 40-45 centimeters, but considering individual differences, adjustable designs are more reasonable, with a recommended adjustment range of 38-48 centimeters. Adult chair heights are mostly concentrated in the 400-500 millimeter range, with the maximum height of soft seats not exceeding 460 millimeters and the recommended height for hard seats being 400-440 millimeters.

II. Ergonomic Design Principles

  1. Leg Angle and Space: When seated, the thighs and calves should be kept perpendicular (approximately a 90-degree bend), with a 5-centimeter space reserved behind the knees to avoid compressing blood vessels and nerves. The feet should be firmly planted on the ground or placed on a footrest to ensure smooth blood circulation in the legs.
  2. Seat Height Calculation Method: The seat height is equal to the sum of the user's popliteal height (the height of the popliteal fossa) and the thickness of the shoe heel, minus an activity allowance of 10-20 millimeters. For example, if the popliteal height is 450 millimeters and the shoe heel is 20 millimeters thick, the seat height should be 450+20-15=455 millimeters (taking the middle value of 15 millimeters as the allowance).
  3. Sitting Posture Verification Standard: The correct seat height should make the thighs parallel to the ground with the knees bent approximately 90 degrees. If the seat is too high, it will cause the legs to hang in the air or compress the thighs; if it is too low, it will cause the body to lean forward, increasing pressure on the waist.

III. Gender Differences and Adjustment Recommendations

Due to differences in height between men and women, the adjustment benchmarks differ:

  • Men: Typically, 43 centimeters is used as the benchmark, with fine adjustments made based on shoe heel thickness and activity allowance. For example, when wearing leather shoes (with a heel thickness of approximately 3 centimeters), the seat height can be set to 43+3-15=31 centimeters (needs to be corrected in combination with the actual popliteal height).
  • Women: It is recommended to use 41 centimeters as the benchmark, also considering shoe heel thickness. For example, when wearing high heels (with a heel thickness of 5 centimeters), the seat height can be set to 41+5-15=31 centimeters (ensuring that the thighs are parallel to the ground).

IV. Special Scenarios and Material Impacts

  • Soft Seats: Due to their strong compressibility, the maximum height should be controlled within 460 millimeters to avoid insufficient seat height after prolonged sitting due to sinking.
  • Hard Seats: The recommended height is 400-440 millimeters, providing better stability and suitable for scenarios requiring precise sitting postures (such as drawing and programming).

By reasonably adjusting the seat height, office comfort can be significantly improved, reducing fatigue and injury risks associated with prolonged sitting.
