Difficulty Reclining in an Office Chair

Admin October 09, 2026

Difficulty reclining in an office chair may be caused by factors such as chair design, locking mechanisms, damage or malfunctions, or improper adjustment, as detailed below:

  1. Chair Design Does Not Allow Reclining
Some office chairs are designed to maintain a more upright sitting posture, such as basic models or those designed for specific work scenarios (e.g., drawing or meetings). These chairs may not be equipped with a reclining function due to their structural design. Typically, the backrest is fixed and cannot be adjusted to a lying position. If a user requires a reclining function, they should confirm whether the chair supports this design or consider replacing it with a model that does.

  2. Locking Mechanism Activated
Many office chairs are equipped with safety locking devices to fix the backrest angle and prevent accidental tipping or excessive tilting. If the chair cannot recline, check for locking switches or buttons beneath the backrest, on the sides of the armrests, or at the connection between the seat and the chair. If the locking device is activated (e.g., the button is not pressed, the knob is not unlocked), adjust it to the unlocked mode and then attempt to recline.

  3. Damage or Malfunction
Prolonged use or improper operation can lead to damage to key components. For example, a malfunctioning handbrake on a gaming chair, air rod leakage in a lifting chair, or aging seals can all affect the backrest adjustment function. Additionally, loose rivets, broken springs, or cracked plastic parts at the backrest connection can increase resistance to reclining or prevent it entirely. In this case, carefully inspect all components of the chair for damage. If any is found, it is recommended to contact the manufacturer or a professional repair technician to replace the parts, avoiding further damage from self-disassembly.

  4. Limited Adjustment Function or Incorrect Adjustment of the Chair
Some office chairs have a limited reclining range, with most models having a maximum recline of around 135ยฐ, while a few high-end models can achieve a flatter angle. If the chair's reclining angle is small, it may not meet lying needs. Furthermore, even if the chair supports reclining, improper adjustment of the backrest angle, headrest, or lumbar support can affect comfort. For example, it is recommended to recline the backrest to between 105ยฐ and 135ยฐ, adjust the headrest to support the cervical spine, and ensure the lumbar support fits the lumbar curve. Users can refer to the instruction manual to readjust the positions of various components to optimize the lying experience.
