Office Chair Design Tutorial

Admin October 12, 2026

The office chair design tutorial can be divided into two methods based on different software: ZW3D design and 3ds Max modeling. The specific steps are as follows:

Designing an Office Chair Using ZW3D

  1. Support Rod Design

    • Component Assembly: Assemble the 'round chair base' and 'support rod' components at the coordinate origin (0,0,0) and fix their positions.
    • Revolved Body Creation: Draw a sketch on the XZ working plane and generate a revolved body through rotation operations; create a cylinder according to design dimensions and merge entities using the 'Boolean Add' operation.
    • Detail Processing: Drill an M5 threaded hole (blind hole) at the end of the support rod, add a starting chamfer; chamfer the bottom surface by 2mm and machine a stepped hole on the top surface to enhance structural strength.
  2. Support Frame Design

    • Component Positioning: Assemble the support frame component at the coordinate origin and fix it to ensure a unified reference.
    • Working Plane Creation: Generate a new plane by offsetting 217.5mm from the YZ working plane, draw the main sketch of the support frame; create a working plane perpendicular to the sketch, draw auxiliary graphics and symmetrically extrude to form a solid.
    • Surface Segmentation and Chamfering: Create a surface using extruded curves, segment the solid and then round the edges to optimize them; mark positions and drill holes on the bottom and side of the armrest to meet functional requirements.
    • Armrest Structure Optimization: Create a new plane based on an auxiliary working plane, draw a sketch and then sweep to generate the armrest surface; draw a parallelogram sketch on the YZ plane and sweep it to complete the armrest shape.

3ds Max Beginner's Modeling Tutorial

  1. Basic Settings and Symmetrical Modeling

    • Window Layout: Adjust the 3ds Max interface to ensure the view windows are suitable for observing model details.
    • Symmetrical Operations: Utilize the software's symmetry function to complete the design of one side of the model first, and then mirror it to generate the other side, ensuring structural balance.
  2. Component-by-Component Modeling

    • Pipe Creation: Convert a cube into a shell surface, adjust the thickness parameter to generate a tubular structure; refine the edges using the 'Edit Poly' tool.
    • Seat Cushion Design: Place a cube to determine the overall outline, use the 'FFD Modifier' or 'Edit Mesh' to adjust the surface curvature, simulating ergonomic curves.
    • Backrest Shaping: Create a curved profile on the side, add segmentation lines to control deformation; use splines to outline the backrest edges and generate surfaces through 'Lathe' or 'Extrude' operations.
  3. Details and Assembly

    • Post Structure: The posts on the side and rear need to be modeled separately, positioned using a black line as the axis of symmetry; generate posts using cylinders or loft operations, adjusting the height and diameter to match the overall style.
    • Model Integration: Combine the components according to the design positions, check the proportions and spacing; use the 'Group' function to manage the model uniformly for easy subsequent modifications.

The two methods are suitable for industrial design (ZW3D) and 3D rendering (3ds Max) respectively. When designing, it is necessary to choose the appropriate method based on functional requirements and software characteristics.
