Office Chair Descent Handling

Admin October 09, 2026

The handling methods for the descent of an office chair need to be differentiated between active adjustment and automatic descent due to malfunctions based on the specific situation, as detailed below:

I. Active Adjustment of Office Chair Height Descent

If you need to manually lower the height of an office chair, choose the corresponding operation based on the type of chair:

  1. Ordinary Office Chair: Usually equipped with a mechanical lifting mechanism, with the core component being a spring or threaded device inside the support rod. During operation, locate the adjustment handle on the support rod (mostly lever-type design), sit on the chair or press down on the seat with your hand to increase the load, and at the same time, lift the handle upwards while maintaining pressure. The chair will slowly descend under the force of gravity. After releasing the handle, the chair will lock at the target height.
  2. Pneumatic Office Chair: Relies on a gas spring for lifting and lowering. Its adjustment knob is generally located beneath the seat or on the side of the support rod. Turning the knob clockwise releases the internal high-pressure nitrogen, causing the seat to descend; turning it counterclockwise raises the seat. During operation, ensure that the seat is evenly loaded to avoid uneven stress on the gas spring due to tilting.

II. Troubleshooting Automatic Descent of Office Chairs

If the chair slowly descends on its own after being loaded, it is usually caused by a malfunction of the gas spring. Follow these steps for troubleshooting and handling:

  1. Cause of Malfunction: The gas spring is the core component of the lifting system, filled with high-pressure nitrogen and sealed with an oil seal. After long-term use, wear on the oil seal leads to poor sealing, or slow leakage of nitrogen, both of which can cause the seat to automatically descend. This phenomenon is normal wear and tear, but it needs to be addressed promptly to avoid safety hazards.
  2. Initial Inspection:
    • Confirm whether the chair is still under warranty (the lifespan of a gas spring is usually 3-5 years).
    • Check whether the descent speed of the seat is uniform. If there are abnormal noises or stuttering, there may be damage to the internal structure of the gas spring.
  3. Solutions:
    • Contact After-sales Service: If the chair is still under warranty, prioritize contacting the brand for a replacement of the gas spring to avoid voiding the warranty by disassembling it yourself.
    • Self-replacement: If you need to handle it yourself, purchase a replacement part that matches the model of the original gas spring (you can check the specifications on the label under the chair or in the instruction manual). When replacing, use specialized tools to disassemble the old part. Do not strike, drill, or heat the gas spring, as its internal high-pressure state may cause an explosion.
    • Temporary Measure: While waiting for repairs, you can place heavy objects (such as books) on the seat to limit the descent speed, but avoid using this method for an extended period.

Important Note: The gas spring is a high-pressure component. Non-professionals should never attempt to disassemble or repair it. If the chair's descent speed suddenly increases or there is a hissing sound, stop using it immediately and contact a professional for handling.
