Office Chair Descends Easily

Admin October 14, 2026

The most common reasons for an office chair descending easily are aging or poor sealing of the gas lift, improper operation, issues with the locking mechanism, or loose mechanical connections, which require targeted solutions based on the specific cause.

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Check Operation and Environment
First, rule out human operational factors, such as frequently adjusting the height function or applying excessive force. Also, check if the floor is level; if the chair is placed on a sloped or soft surface, uneven weight distribution may accelerate descent.

  2. Inspect Mechanical Connections

    • Loose Screws: Check the screws and bolts at connection points like the base, five-star foot, and armrests for looseness, and tighten them one by one with tools.
    • Locking Mechanism Issues: Check if the locking knob at the bottom of the gas lift or beside the adjustment handle has been accidentally tightened, locking the height adjustment function; try adjusting it to a suitable position.
    • Seat Installation: For models where the seat can be separated from the chassis, confirm that the seat is properly installed and the clips are securely locked to avoid functional abnormalities due to poor contact.
  3. Diagnose Gas Lift Condition
The gas lift is the core component of the height adjustment system, and its failure is the main cause of descent:

    • Signs of Air Leakage: Observe if there are oil stains or liquid seepage on the metal surface of the gas lift, which is a direct indication of internal high-pressure nitrogen leakage or wear of the oil seal.
    • Damping Test: Press down on the seat surface when unoccupied; if the descent resistance is abnormally loose with no damping feel, or if it cannot rebound and stay fixed after pressing, it indicates severe nitrogen leakage or damage to the seal inside the gas lift.

Repair Solutions

  1. Loose Screws or Locking Mechanism Issues
If loose screws are found during inspection, simply tighten them; if the locking mechanism is too tight, adjust it to an appropriate tightness to avoid damaging components with excessive force.

  2. Gas Lift Failure
The gas lift is a precision component sealed once and cannot be repaired; it needs to be replaced with a new one:

    • Self-Replacement: Measure the diameter and height of the old gas lift, purchase a new gas lift of the matching model, knock out the old one with a rubber mallet and steel pipe, and then install the new one.
    • Official Repair: Contact the official repair service according to the chair's purchase time and the brand's after-sales policy to ensure that the replacement components meet safety standards.
  3. Damage to Adjustment Handle or Mechanical Components
If the adjustment handle is broken, the control button is stuck, or internal mechanical components such as gears or springs are damaged, repair requires disassembling the internal structure, which has high technical requirements. It is recommended to contact the purchase merchant, manufacturer's after-sales service, or professional furniture repair personnel to avoid secondary damage or safety hazards due to improper operation.
