Office Chair Only Descends

Admin October 11, 2026

The most common reason an office chair only descends is the aging or poor sealing of the gas cylinder, leading to the leakage of internal high-pressure nitrogen or the wear of the oil seal.

Simple Self-Inspection Methods

  1. Listen for sounds and feel: When raising, lowering, or sitting still, if you hear a hissing air leak sound or a stuttering noise from metal friction, it may indicate that the gas cylinder's seal has failed or its internal structure is worn.
  2. Observe the descending pattern: Slow and continuous descent is usually caused by a slow air leak in the gas cylinder; if the chair suddenly drops without any resistance, it may involve serious damage to the internal structure (such as piston breakage).
  3. Check mechanical connections: Ensure that the screws at the connections between the gas cylinder and the five-star base (footrest) and the seat chassis are not loose. Loose screws can cause the chair to be unstable but generally do not trigger regular automatic descent.

Core Solutions

  1. Contact the official after-sales service
    • Locate the purchase proof (invoice, order record) to confirm the brand and warranty period.
    • During the warranty period: Directly contact the brand's official customer service and describe the problem. Mainstream ergonomic chair brands usually provide a 3-5 year warranty for core components such as the gas cylinder, allowing for free repair or replacement services.
    • After the warranty period: You can still contact the official customer service to inquire about paid repair services or channels to purchase original spare parts. Some brand flagship stores sell gas cylinders separately.
  2. Replace the gas cylinder yourself
    • If the chair is out of warranty and the official repair cost is too high, you can replace the gas cylinder yourself. This component is sealed once and cannot be repaired, so it needs to be replaced as a whole.
    • Operation points: Safely disassembling the old gas cylinder is a crucial step. You need to use professional tools and follow the disassembly process. When installing the new gas cylinder, ensure that it matches the interfaces with the seat chassis and the five-star base.
  3. Other temporary solutions
    • Contact a professional repair person to replace the air strut.
    • If you cannot find a repair service, adjust the chair to a comfortable height, mark the position on the gas cylinder, disassemble it, and fill the internal space of the cylinder with a hard rod or similar material to reduce the descent (but this method may affect the lifting function).
    • It is strictly prohibited to disassemble, drill holes in, or repair the gas cylinder yourself: It is under high pressure internally, and improper operation may lead to an explosion risk.

Precautions

  • The gas cylinder is a core safety component of an office chair. When purchasing, choose products that have passed international safety certifications such as SGS and BIFMA to avoid using low-quality gas cylinders.
  • After long-term use, even if there are no faults, it is recommended to regularly check the sealing of the gas cylinder to extend its service life.
