Office Chair Depth Testing
Office chair depth testing is a critical project that involves precise measurement of the effective usable depth of the seat surface, aiming to verify whether the product meets ergonomic and quality control requirements.

Testing Objects and Scope
The testing object is the effective usable depth of the seat surface of office chairs, which refers to the horizontal shortest distance from the midpoint of the front edge of the seat to the backrest or vertical blocking component (such as the support point at the junction of the seat cushion and the backrest). The testing scope covers finished seats made of materials such as solid wood, artificial boards (particleboard, fiberboard), and multi-layer boards, including office chairs, dining chairs, lounge chairs, and sofas.
Testing Environment and Conditions
Testing should be conducted in a standard laboratory environment with constant temperature and humidity, typically controlled at 20โยฑ2โ and relative humidity of 65%ยฑ5%, to avoid material deformation caused by temperature and humidity changes affecting measurement results. Samples should be allowed to equilibrate in the standard environment for at least 24 hours to ensure stable material conditions.
Testing Instruments and Tools
- Core Instruments: Large vernier calipers, digital depth gauges, or specialized furniture size measuring instruments, with a measurement range covering 0-800mm, a resolution of no less than 0.5mm, and an accuracy grade that meets relevant standards.
- Auxiliary Tools: Rigid square rulers or angle gauges (to determine the measurement reference direction), a flat and stable testing platform (to ensure the product is placed horizontally), and a soft-seat cushion indentation loader (to simulate the indentation effect of a person sitting and measure the effective seat depth under actual load-bearing conditions).
Testing Methods and Procedures
- Sample Preparation: Allow the sample to equilibrate in the standard environment for at least 24 hours, and verify and record the calibration status of the instruments.
- Product Positioning: Place the chair steadily on the testing platform, ensuring that all chair legs are in contact with the ground and the backrest is at a standard angle, simulating normal use conditions.
- Reference Determination: Use a square ruler to assist in determining the transverse reference line at the midpoint of the front edge of the seat.
- Measurement Execution:
- Hard Seat Surfaces: Directly extend the measuring scale horizontally from the reference point backward until it touches the front edge of the backrest or a preset blocking point, and record the shortest horizontal distance.
- Soft Seat Surfaces: Apply a specified standard load at designated positions on the seat surface, eliminate initial deformation, and then measure the seat depth under the loaded condition.
By following the above procedures, accurate and reliable testing data can be ensured, providing a scientific basis for the design optimization and quality control of office chairs.
