Deflating an Office Chair

Admin October 09, 2026

The gas cylinder of an office chair can be deflated, but it is not recommended to do it yourself. If necessary, refer to the following steps:

Step 1: Locate the deflation port of the gas cylinder The deflation port of the gas cylinder is usually located at the bottom or side. Use an appropriate tool (such as a small wrench or screwdriver) to gently unscrew it. Before operation, ensure that the tool matches the deflation port to avoid slippage or damage due to an improper tool. If the deflation port is covered with sealant, clean the surface impurities first, and then slowly rotate the tool to prevent damage to the internal structure of the gas cylinder due to excessive force.

Step 2: Deflate slowly and control the speed After opening the deflation port, gently press the gas cylinder to slowly release the gas. The key is to control the rate of pressure drop: If the gas is released too quickly, the chair structure may suddenly lose pressure, causing the seat cushion to collapse or the backrest to tilt, and even causing the user to fall. It is recommended to operate at a frequency of 1-2 light presses per second while observing the telescoping state of the gas cylinder to ensure smooth contraction.

Step 3: Monitor the pressure change and determine the stopping time As the gas is discharged, the telescoping resistance of the gas cylinder will gradually decrease. Judge the appropriate pressure based on the user experience: When sitting on the chair, if the support feels moderate (neither too hard causing discomfort to the buttocks nor too soft causing sinking), and the backrest can maintain a stable angle, stop deflating. If inexperienced, refer to the initial height of the chair when it left the factory: Usually, when the gas cylinder is fully inflated, the chair is about 45-50 centimeters above the ground, and a height reduction of 10%-20% after deflation is a reasonable range.

Step 4: Close the deflation port and check the tightness After completing the deflation, immediately tighten the deflation port with a tool to prevent continuous gas leakage. Checking the tightness is crucial: You can gently touch the area around the deflation port with your hand to confirm that there is no gas escape; or observe whether the gas cylinder maintains a stable height within 10 minutes. If gas leakage is found, re-tighten the deflation port or replace the seal ring to avoid abnormal chair function due to insufficient pressure.

Precautions:

  1. Clean the surrounding environment before operation and remove fragile items to avoid collision damage when the chair suddenly loses pressure.
  2. The high-pressure gas in the gas cylinder may cause frostbite or impact injuries to the skin. Wear protective gloves during operation and keep your face away from the deflation port.
  3. If you are not familiar with the structure of the gas cylinder or the chair has been in use for more than 5 years (the lifespan of a gas cylinder is usually 3-5 years), it is recommended to contact the manufacturer or a professional maintenance technician to handle it to prevent the risk of explosion caused by improper operation (low-quality gas cylinders may break under high pressure).
