Office Chair Deflation

Admin October 08, 2026

Deflating an office chair can be done through the following steps, but proceed with caution and pay attention to safety:

  1. Locate the deflation port of the gas cylinder
The deflation port of the gas cylinder is usually located at the bottom or side. Some designs may be hidden under a decorative cover. Use an appropriate tool (such as a screwdriver or a special wrench) to gently unscrew it, avoiding excessive force that could damage the components. If you cannot locate the deflation port, refer to the product manual or contact the manufacturer for guidance.

  2. Release the gas slowly
After opening the deflation port, gently press the gas cylinder to allow the gas to escape at a controlled rate. Do not press quickly or operate violently, as a sudden drop in pressure could cause the chair's structure to become unbalanced (such as the base detaching or the wheels shifting), or even lead to accidental tipping. Pause intermittently during the release process to observe changes in gas pressure.

  3. Monitor the gas pressure and adjust to a comfortable level
As the gas escapes, the pressure will gradually decrease. Judge whether the desired state has been reached based on the sitting feel: when the chair height is appropriate and there is no sudden sinking feeling when sitting down, stop deflating. If excessive deflation causes the chair to become too low, it may be necessary to reinflate it or replace the gas cylinder (which requires professional operation).

  4. Close the deflation port and check for airtightness
After completing the deflation, be sure to tighten the deflation port and confirm that it is properly sealed. Apply soapy water to the connection and observe for bubbles to detect air leaks. If a leak is found, re-tighten or replace the seal to prevent continuous gas loss from affecting use.

Precautions:

  • Protective measures: The high-pressure gas (usually nitrogen) inside the gas cylinder may cause frostbite or impact injuries to the skin. Wear thick gloves and goggles during operation.
  • Professional assistance: If the gas cylinder is aged, rusted, or an unregulated product (such as one without safety certification marks), it is recommended to contact after-sales service or a repair technician for handling. Avoid self-operation to prevent explosion risks (inferior gas cylinders may burst during frequent adjustments due to insufficient gas purity or uneven wall thickness).
  • Functional impact: After deflation, the chair will lose its height adjustment function. Confirm that this result meets long-term usage needs. If the function needs to be restored, a new gas cylinder must be installed.

Safety tips: In daily use, avoid frequently adjusting the chair height. Regularly inspect the appearance of the gas cylinder (such as for cracks or deformation) and the smoothness of height adjustment. Choosing products that have passed international safety certifications such as BIFMA and EN1335 can significantly reduce the risk of accidents.
