Office Chair Cylindrical Protrusion

Admin October 14, 2026

An abnormally protruding cylindrical structure beneath an office chair is usually caused by damage to the five-star base, leading to the sinking of the gas lift rod, and requires prompt repair or replacement to avoid safety hazards.

The cylindrical structure protruding beneath an office chair is typically a gas lift rod (also known as a gas spring), which is the core component enabling the chair's height adjustment function. The gas lift rod is filled with high-pressure nitrogen gas, and it regulates the chair's height by controlling the compression and release of the gas while providing cushioning to reduce the impact on the spine. Under normal circumstances, the protruding height of the gas lift rod should be in harmony with the overall structure of the chair and should not affect safety during use.

If the gas lift rod protrudes abnormally, even exceeding the height of the wheels, it is usually not due to a malfunction of the gas lift rod itself but rather damage to the five-star base (the five-claw support structure at the bottom of the chair). The function of the five-star base is to secure the gas lift rod and distribute pressure. If it experiences fractures, deformation, or loose connections, the gas lift rod will sink due to the loss of support, causing the bottom to protrude. At this point, the stability of the chair will significantly decrease, posing the following risks:

  1. Tipping Risk: After the gas lift rod sinks, the chair's center of gravity shifts, making it prone to tipping over when moved or tilted;
  2. Height Adjustment Failure: The gas lift rod may become stuck due to uneven force distribution, preventing normal height adjustment;
  3. Further Structural Damage: Prolonged use may lead to gas leakage from the gas lift rod or complete fracture of the five-star base, exacerbating safety hazards.

Solutions:

  1. Cease Use Immediately: Avoid falls or injuries caused by the unstable chair;
  2. Inspect the Five-Star Base: Check for cracks, deformation, or loose connections in the five claws, and gently shake the chair to test its stability;
  3. Contact for Repair or Replacement: If the five-star base is damaged, replace it with a component of the same specifications; if the gas lift rod is damaged due to sinking, replace it as well. It is recommended to choose gas lift rods produced by reputable manufacturers to ensure they meet safety standards (such as passing BIFMA certification).

During daily use, avoid jumping vigorously on the chair or using it with excessive weight. Regularly inspect the connections between the five-star base and the gas lift rod to extend the chair's lifespan and ensure safety.
