Office Chair Cylinder Replacement
The replacement of an office chair cylinder can be carried out following these steps:

I. Purchasing a Cylinder
The length of the cylinder typically ranges from 60 to 180 millimeters, with a consistent diameter specification. Beginners do not need to overly fret about matching the model precisely; just ensure that the length is similar to that of the original cylinder. Cylinders can be purchased through e-commerce platforms at relatively affordable prices, for example, a 120-millimeter cylinder may cost around twenty-plus yuan. When purchasing, it is advisable to choose a reputable merchant and confirm that the product comes with installation instructions or accessories.
II. Removing the Old Cylinder
- Pressing Method: Invert the chair onto a stable surface, ensuring sufficient operating space beneath the base. Observe the metal retaining clip on the inner side of the connection between the gas lift and the base. Use a slender tool (such as a small flat-head screwdriver, the tip of tweezers, or a de-cored ballpoint pen casing) to press the retaining clip inward. After hearing a 'click' sound, steadily pull the gas lift upward with your hand to separate it from the base. This method is suitable for cases where the retaining clip is not rusted or the connection is loose.
- Tapping Method: If pressing the retaining clip is difficult or the gas lift is stuck due to long-term use and rust, invert or lay the chair on the ground. Use a rubber mallet or a regular hammer wrapped in a thick towel to tap evenly around the metal ring connecting the gas lift to the base (or seat). Avoid concentrating the taps on a single point. After tapping several rounds, hold the gas lift or base with one hand while continuing to tap the connection and attempting to pull it upward or shake it side to side. For stubborn rust, apply lubricating oil to the connection gap and let it sit for 1-2 hours before tapping again.
- Twisting Method: When the threaded connection between the gas lift and the seat (upper end) is stuck, first apply lubricating oil to the threads. Use a 10-inch or 14-inch pipe wrench (or locking pliers) to grip the metal part of the gas lift rod (as close to the connection as possible) and twist it counterclockwise (usually reverse-threaded). At the same time, use your other hand or foot to hold the seat steady until the gas lift is unscrewed. This method may leave marks, so proceed with caution. Alternatively, you can try having two people cooperate to shake and pull it out, or first remove the seat and then tap the gas rods at the bottom of the chair legs and seat separately.
III. Installing the New Cylinder
Install the new cylinder with the larger end facing downward onto the five-star base, ensuring a secure connection. Then assemble the seat cushion with the base, for example, position the tray handle to the side, align the holes, pass through the gasket, and tighten the screws with a tool. After installation, check that the cylinder's lifting and lowering functions are normal and ensure there is no looseness or abnormal noise.
