Office Chair Cylinder Repair

Admin October 11, 2026

The repair of the office chair cylinder (gas spring) can be carried out according to the following steps. If you are not familiar with the operation, it is recommended to seek professional help:

1. Remove the office chair base Place the office chair on a level surface. Use a screwdriver or a special tool to remove the base fixed under the seat. Then, lay the chair on its side and place a soft support (such as a foam block) beside it to prevent rolling. Note: When laying the chair on its side, avoid sharp components touching the ground to prevent scratching the floor or damaging the chair structure.

2. Inspect and remove the cylinder

  • Initial inspection: Refer to the manufacturer's manual to identify the damaged parts of the cylinder (such as air leakage, jamming, or inability to adjust the height). If there are cracks on the cylinder surface or severe wear on the piston rod, it needs to be replaced directly.
  • Removal steps: Use pliers to grip the metal tube at the connection between the cylinder and the base. Slowly rotate and gently pull the cylinder. If the cylinder does not come off, repeat the rotation action. Do not forcefully pry it open, as this may damage the seat bracket or the internal structure of the gas spring.

3. Purchase a compatible cylinder

  • Model confirmation: Record the size of the original cylinder (such as diameter and stroke length) or the brand and model of the office chair. Search for matching products through furniture stores, hardware stores, or e-commerce platforms.
  • Quality control: Give priority to purchasing from formal channels to avoid low-priced and inferior cylinders (which may have safety hazards such as unstable air pressure and easy air leakage). Some brand cylinders need to be obtained through official after-sales channels.

4. Install the new cylinder

  • Assemble the base: Insert the new cylinder vertically into the hole in the base. Use a wrench to tighten the fixing nut at the bottom (with an appropriate force to avoid slipping).
  • Connect the seat: Align the seat bracket with the piston rod at the top of the cylinder and gently press it down until it is fixed by the snap-fit. Ensure that the connection is not loose.
  • Overall inspection: Confirm that all bolts (especially those at the connection between the seat and the cylinder) are tightened to prevent them from coming loose during use.

5. Function test

  • Height adjustment test: Repeatedly adjust the seat height to observe whether the cylinder operates smoothly without jamming and whether there is any abnormal noise during the height adjustment process.
  • Stability test: Sit on the chair and rock back and forth to check whether the connection between the cylinder and the base is stable and whether there is any wobbling or tilting.

Precautions:

  • Wear gloves throughout the repair process to prevent scratches from metal components.
  • If there is high-pressure gas remaining inside the cylinder, release the pressure slowly before removal (some cylinders require a special tool for gas release).
  • Non-professionals should not disassemble the internal structure of the cylinder (such as seals and pistons) on their own, as this may cause the air pressure system to fail.
