Office Chair Cylinder Repair

Admin October 11, 2026

For repairing the cylinder of an office chair, you can refer to the following steps, which are divided into two solutions: replacing the cylinder and temporary repair:

I. Replacing with a New Cylinder (Complete Repair Solution)

  1. Removing the Base
    Place the office chair upside down or on its side on a level surface. Use a screwdriver or wrench to remove the fixing bolts that connect the seat to the base, and carefully take off the base. When placing it on its side, use a soft object (such as a towel) to cushion the chair body to prevent sliding or scratches.

  2. Separating the Old Cylinder
    Refer to the manufacturer's manual to confirm the cylinder model and the damaged part. Use pliers to grip the metal tube connecting the cylinder to the base, slowly rotate and gently pull the cylinder. If it does not come off, repeat the operation. Do not forcefully pry it to avoid damaging the chair frame or base.

  3. Selecting a Compatible Cylinder
    Bring the old cylinder or measure its diameter and stroke length (the range of cylinder extension and retraction) and purchase a product of the same model from a regular hardware store. The size error should be controlled within ยฑ2mm, otherwise, it may lead to unstable installation or inability to adjust the height.

  4. Installing the New Cylinder
    Align the conical end of the cylinder with the mounting hole on the chair frame and press it down vertically until it is fully embedded. Apply a small amount of lubricant (such as silicone grease) to the cylinder interface on the base, fit the base over the cylinder, and tighten the fixing bolts. After installation, check the perpendicularity of the cylinder to the chair frame and base.

  5. Testing and Adjustment
    After reassembling the office chair, adjust the seat height using the pneumatic rod to confirm smooth lifting and lowering without abnormal noises. If the height cannot be fixed, check whether the cylinder seal is aged or whether the installation is in place.

II. Temporary Repair Solution (Suitable for Emergencies)

  1. Hose Clamp Fixing Method

    • Slide down the plastic skirt of the seat to expose the metal cylinder;
    • Adjust the seat to the desired height and wrap a hose clamp around the middle of the cylinder;
    • Wrap rubber bands around the cylinder surface or sand it to increase friction;
    • Tighten the hose clamp screws and test the stability of the seat height. If it slides down, use 2-3 clampsๅ ๅŠ  (stacked).
  2. PVC Pipe Fixing Method

    • Measure the diameter of the cylinder (commonly 5-8cm) and the exposed length at the desired height;
    • Purchase a PVC pipe with a diameter slightly larger than the cylinder (such as an outer diameter of 6cm) and saw a longitudinal cut;
    • Fit the PVC pipe over the cylinder with the cut facing down and clamp it tightly to the base, ensuring that the upper end of the pipe rests against the bottom of the seat;
    • If the pipe is too long, trim it to the appropriate length with a saw blade.

Precautions:

  • Non-professionals should wear gloves during operation to avoid metal scratches;
  • The temporary repair solution is only suitable for emergencies. Long-term use may cause the seat to suddenly sink due to cylinder air leakage;
  • If the cylinder leaks oil, is deformed, or the internal piston is stuck, it must be replaced with a new cylinder;
  • Avoid rapid lifting and lowering during the first use after repair to prevent pneumatic impact from damaging parts.
