Office Chair Cylinder Repair
Admin October 09, 2026
The repair methods for office chair cylinders mainly include replacing the cylinder, repairing with a hose clamp, repairing with a PVC pipe, replacing the gas rod seal, and replacing the entire gas rod, etc..

Replacing the Cylinder
- Removing the Base: Place the office chair on a level surface and use a screwdriver or other tools to remove the base under the seat.
- Inspecting the Cylinder: Refer to the user manual to identify the repair area. Use pliers to grip the gas bottle tube, open it, and loosen the cylinder. Repeat the operation until the cylinder falls off on its own. Be careful not to forcefully remove it to avoid damaging other parts.
- Purchasing a New Cylinder: Go to a hardware store and inquire about the model. Buy a new cylinder with the same size as the original one.
- Installing the New Cylinder: Install it carefully to ensure correctness. Reassemble the office chair, tighten all bolts with a wrench, adjust the seat height, and check if it works properly.
Repairing a Sinking Office Chair with a Hose Clamp
- Exposing the Cylinder: Slide the plastic skirt down from the cylinder to expose the metal cylinder.
- Adjusting the Height: Adjust the chair to a height where the seat is level with your knees when standing.
- Wrapping the Hose Clamp: Loosen the hose clamp screw, pull out the belt end, and wrap it around the metal cylinder without tightening it.
- Enhancing the Grip Surface: Wrap rubber bands or tape around the cylinder, or sand the dirty or greasy areas of the cylinder and clean them.
- Securing the Hose Clamp: Tighten the clamp as much as possible. After confirming the correct chair height, tighten the hose clamp and rotate the screw to secure it.
- Testing and Adjusting: Test the chair. If the height is incorrect, move the clamp up or down. If the clamp slips, secure it with rubber strips or try the PVC pipe method.
Repairing a Sinking Office Chair with a PVC Pipe
- Measuring the Size: Pull down the plastic skirt and use a ruler to estimate the diameter of the cylinder. Measure the length when the chair is at the perfect height.
- Purchasing a PVC Pipe: Choose a pipe with the same or slightly larger diameter as the cylinder and a diameter of 1.5 inches (3.8 cm). Buy a straight pipe that is long enough.
- Sawing the Pipe: Secure the pipe in a vise and use a hacksaw or reciprocating saw to cut it lengthwise on one side only. Wear a mask or respirator when cutting.
- Fitting the Pipe over the Cylinder: Push the cut side onto the cylinder so that it fits snugly around it.
Replacing the Gas Rod Seal and the Gas Rod
- Replacing the Seal: Locate the seal at the bottom of the gas rod. Use a wrench or screwdriver to remove it, clean and inspect it. If it is damaged, buy a new seal to replace it. Ensure it is installed firmly and test it.
- Replacing the Gas Rod: Turn the chair upside down, locate the position of the connecting screws, use tools to remove the screws and take out the old gas rod. Buy a compatible new gas rod, install it, and test it.
If you are not familiar with repairs, it is advisable to seek help from professionals. When purchasing accessories, choose a regular hardware store.
